IVILLIAM WV. PIOKENS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HAT-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1906.
Application filed April 6, 1906. Serial No. 310,336.
a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful HatHolder, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding hats and similar articles, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and
eflicient holder capable of being quickly at tached to or detached from a chair or other suitable support and which may be compactly folded when not in use, so as to permit the same to be conveniently carried in the pocket.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder com )rising a supporting-ring formed of a pluraiity of pivoted members movable laterally to open position and provided with interlocking ends, said ring being provided with a depending suspension device for supporting a hat or other article.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to add to their utility and durability, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat-holder constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in position on one of the vertical rails of a chair-back. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the supporting-ring detached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the holder, showing the same supported on one of the horizontal rounds of the chair.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved holder consists of a supporting-ring comprising a pair of pivoted members 5 and 6, one of which is bifurcated, as indicated at 7, for the reception of the reduced end 8 of the adjacent member and through which passes a pivot-pin 9, whereby said members are free to move laterally to open and closed position. The free end of t e member 6 is bent to form a terminal hook 10, adapted to engage an eye 11, formed by bending the free end of the member 5, as shown, whereby the ring may be conveniently locked 'in position on the back of a chair or other suitable support.
Depending from the supporting-ring is a suspension device, preferably in the form of a spring-clasp 12, of any approved construction, said clasp being adapted to support a hat or other article, as indicated at 13. One of the clamping-jaws of the clasp 12 is extended beyond the end of the adjacent jaw and is curved laterally to form a loop 14 for the reception of the supporting-ring. The diameter of the loop 14 is greater than that of the supporting-ring, whereby the clasp 12 may be adjusted on the ring, so as to support the hat at any desired position.
Attention is called to the fact that the pivotal or hinged connection between the members 5 and 6 is disposed flush with the upper surface of the ring, so as to permit the loop 14 to slide, over the hinge when the clasp is adjusted.
In using the device the members 5 and 6 are placed in position on the support (indicated at 15) and the hook 10 inserted in the eye 11, thereby clamping the ring on said support. The clasp is then adjusted longitudinally to the desired position and the hat or other article inserted between the clam ing-jaws of the clasp 12 by depressing t 1e movable jaw in the usual manner. In order to remove the device, it is merely necessary to release the hook 11, when the supportingring may be quickly detached. By having the suspension device or clasp slidably and pivotally mounted on the supporting-ring the clasp may be folded within the ring, so as to permit the holder to be conveniently car ried in the pocket when not in use. It will thus be seen that there is provided an extremely simple and inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A device of the class described, comprising a supporting-ring formed of aplurality of my own I have hereto affixed my signature pivoted members movable laterally to open in the presence of two witnesses. position and provided With interlocking ends, WILLIAM W PIOKENS and a spring-clasp depending from the ring 5 and pivotallymoun'te'd for slidable movement Witnesses:
