CAR-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,659, dated April 16, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Straps, of which.
the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention is a car-strap or hand-hold device, which, as generally stated, comprises a strap or flexible member with depending ends, one of which ends is provided with a weight or hand-hold that drops by gravity to maintain the other end of the strap normally raised, which latter end constitutes an extensible hand-hold, that is to say, such latter end may be readily grasped and drawn downward against the action of the weighted portion, as will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved car-strap, the full lines showing it in its normal position, and the dotted lines showing it as extended. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. A designates a strap, or other suitable flexible device, which runs freely through an appropriate hanger B suspended from the usual supporting bar (3 within the car; or thestrap may run directly over the bar if desired. One of the depending ends of the strap is passed through and secured to an upwardly projecting eye e on a ring or hand-hold E, while the other end of the strap is extended freely through the eye and is looped to form a handhold F. Between the free end of the looped portion and the body of the strap there isinterposed a loop g, of leather or the like, which constitutes a stop to limit the downward movement of the hand-hold E, the latter being of sufficient weight to drop to the stop by gravity and thus maintain the looped handhold normally raised. The Weight hand hold is within the reach of a person of ordinary height, by whom it may be used. When the looped hand hold is grasped, the hand-hold E is drawn up, in which case the strap is ex tended to accommodate a person of short stature. When the looped-hand hold 1s released the parts automatically resume their original positions.
I claim as my invention 1. A car-strap or hand-hold device, consisting in the combination, with the supporting bar, of a looped flexible member freely connected therewith so as to have two depend- 6o ing oppositely-movable ends which constitute hand-holds, one of said ends being weighted to maintain the other end normally raised, substantially as described. I
2. A car-strap or hand-hold device, comprising alooped flexible member, one depen ding end thereof constituting an extensible hand-hold, and the other depending end thereof being provided with a weight handhold which maintains the first-named handhold normally raised, substantially as de scribed.
3. A car-strap or hand-hold device, comprising a looped flexible member, with two depending oppositely-movable ends, and a weight and hand ring provided with an eye to which one end of the strap is secured, and through which the other end of the strap extends, said extending portion being provided with a stop, substantially as described.
4. A car-strap or hand-hold device, consisting in the combination with the supporting bar and a depending hanger thereon, of a looped strap extending freely through said hanger, and a Weight hand-hold secured to one depending end of the strap soas to maintain the other depending end thereof normally raised, substantially as described.
