ABNER S. NEWOOMB, OF WOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SEAT FOR BATH-TU BS.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No; 754,369, dated March 8, 1904:.
Application filed February 1'7, 1898. Serial No. 670,611. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HARBOUR, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seats for Bath- Tubs, of which the following is a specification,
accompanied by drawings, forming a part of the same, in which Figure 1 shows a transverse sectional View of the upper portion of a .bath-tub, showing the edges or rim of the tub with one of my improved seats suspended therefrom. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of one of my improved seats removed from the tub with one of the suspension-hooks withdrawn from the seat, and Fig." 3 is a perspective view of my improved seat with the suspension hooks folded upon the seat.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the different figures.
The object of my invention is to provide a seat for bath-tubs which is simple and inexpensive in construction and that may be folded into a confpact space and it consists in the several features of construction as hereinafter described, and set forth in the annexed claims.
Referring to the drawings, A A denote the sides of the bath-tub, and A A its edges or rim. B denotes a wooden board forming the seat, of suitable width and somewhat shorter than the distance between the sides of the tub.
In the opposite edges of the board B, I bore holes B a short distance from the ends of the board to receive the bent ends of the suspension-hooks C O, by which the board is suspended from the rim of the tub. Each of the hooks O consists of a single piece of steel wire bent at. its ends to form short prongs O O,
springing the prongs into the holes, Where they are held by the elasticity of the wire. 5
Short pieces of rubber tubing D are applied to the curved sections of the hooks to hold the wire out of contact with the rim of the tub.
and a short piece of rubber tubing is applied to the central portion of the straight section O 5 5 Each pair of hooks C O acting as a single hook serves to suspend each end of the seat B from the rim A, and the hooks at each end of the seat are pivotally connected with the seat,
so that they are capable of being folded down upon the seat, as represented in Fig. 3, to secure greater compactness or convenience lIl packing.
By uniting the hooks O C by the straight section G I hold the hooks a fixed distance apart and parallel with each other Without requiring a rigid attachment of the hooks to the ends of the seat. 7 The strips of rubber tubing D can be readily applied to or removed from the hooks over the ends of the prongs 7 C when they are removed from the holes in the seat. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a bath-tub 7 5 seat comprising a plate provided with recesses on the edges thereof, and a pair of duplicate removable suspension-hooks, each hook comprising arms and a cross-piece, elastic buffers removably received upon and surrounding the arms and cross-piece of the hooks, and inwardly-projecting prongs formed on the free ends of the arms, the prongs removably received within the recesses in the plate, the hooks adapted to fold upon the plate and 5 adapted to supportthe plate only in a suspended position and fitting closely against either edge of the plate when folded to prevent accidental displacement, the buffers when the hooks are folded, adapted to engage the 9 lower edge of the plate and serving as stops to retain them in folded position.
2. As an article of manufacture, a bathing appliance comprising a rigid seat, and a pair of duplicate independent hooks, each formed of resilient material, each hook comprising a pair of arms and a cross-piece, the arms each bent into hook shape and inclosing a space equal to vent the accidental displacement of the hooks when in folded position.
Dated this 10th day of February, 1898.
GEORGE W. HARBOUR.
