DETACHABLE SUPPORT FOR STREET CARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,223, dated June 8, 1897.

Application filed March 15, 1897- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY HAMMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Supports for Street-Oars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in detachable supports for street-cars, and has for its object to provide a strap which can be folded and carried in the pocket.

The object of the invention is to provide a support which can be easily adjusted to the supporting-bar of a street-car and when not in use to be folded into a neat and compact package. It further aims to produce a support which will decrease the danger of conveying contagious diseases.

With the above and other objects in view the invention finally; consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout both views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the support extended. Fig. 2 is a view showing the same folded.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates one Serial No. 627,632. (No model.)

section; 2, a hook carried by said section; 3, an extension hinged at and carrying on one end a ball 5. A portion of the extension 3 is enlarged, as shown at 6, to form a convenient handheld.

When in use, the device is extended, as shown in Fig. l, the hook 2 engaging the supporting-rail of a street-car, the passenger gripping the extension at 6, the ball 7 preventing the hand from sliding off. On leaving the car it isfolded, as shown in Fig. 2, the ball inside of the hook, forming a neat and attractive package.

It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. In a supporting device, a'section provided with a hook, an extension, a ball carried by said extension, said section and extension being hinged intermediate the ends, substantially as shown and described.

2. Inasupporting device, asection 1, hook 2, an extension 3, ball 5, said extension having an enlarged portion 6, said sections hinged intermediate the ends, substantially as shown and described.
