MAHLON WARNE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAPS FOR STREET-CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,397, dated April 1, 1873; application filed January 18, 1873. g
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAHLON WARNE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Supports and Advertising Mediums for Street- (Jars, of which the following is a specification: 7
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved form of hand-support for passengers who are compelled to stand in street or other railway cars or omnibuses, so constructed that it shall also serve as an advertising medium; and it consists in a metallic frame (incidentally adapted for containing advertisements) suspended from the hand-rail by a swivel-connection, and in a hand-strap attached thereto, as hereinafter described.

A is the hand-rail of the car. B is a metallic frame, of oval or other form, composed of two similarly-constructed parts secured together,
as seen in the drawing, forming a groove, (J,
between them suitable for the reception of glass plates, prints, business-cards, or advertisements, so that the frame, thus forming a portion of the hand-support, may also be used as an advertising medium. This frame is suspended from the hand-rail by the strap D,
which is connected with the frame by the swivel 0r ball-and-socket joint E. F is the hand-strap, attached to the opposite edges of the frame by means of the pivot-pins G G.
The prints or cards in the frame, protected by the glass plates, will naturally attract the attention of the passengers, While they add an attractive and ornamental feature to the car.
The frame is so constructed that the cards or advertisements can be readily changed from time to time, as may be found necessary.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved hand-support for passengercars, formed of the frame B, connected to the strap D on the rail A by means of a swiveljoint, E, and the strap F, attached to the pins G at the sides of the frame, as specified.
