EDWARD F. CHAFFEE, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO OLIVER 1V1. EDWARDS, 0F SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
CAR-VESTIBULE CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. CHAFFEE, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Car-vestibule Ourtain-Fixture, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of a fixture adapted to be attached to the vestibules of railway cars and havmg means whereby all diaphragm curtains, that is, curtains provided with the various kinds of fixtures at their free ends, may be attached thereto; and the invention consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invent-ion reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
. Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of the adjoining vestibules of two cars coupled together. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the free edge of a curtain and my fixture, the curtain being provided with the ordinary grab handle for cooperating with my fixture. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the grab handle shown in Fig. 2, the con tiguous part of the curtain being also shown. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a curtain provided with spring pressed jaws cooperating with my fixture. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, on line A-A, Fig. 4.
1 and 2 designate the contiguous vestibules of two cars, the same being here shown as including the usual bellows 3. b a are oppositely arranged vestibule diaphragm curtains for shielding the bellows, each curtain 4: usually winding on a spring roller 5 fixed in vertical position to an upright frame member 6 of the vestibule of one of the cars, the free edge of the curtain being normally temporarily secured to a similar upright frame member 7 on the adjoining car.
The construction of the vestibules and the curtains per .96 forms no part of this invention, and as the same is well known, further description is thought to be unnecessary.
8 is a grab handle in the form of a yoke secured to the free edge of the diaphragm curtain, in some cars, and 9 is a similar fixture with which the curtains of other cars are equipped. The grab handle 8, as shown Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 22, 1912.
Patented J an. 21, 1913.
Serial No. 732,906.
in Figs. 2 and 3, is formed with a vertical intermediate portion and with side portions formed with split clamps 10 which conform to a rod 11 arranged in the hem or loop at the free end of the curtain, the split clamps 10 being held in position by fastening members as bolts 12 extending transversely through the clamps and the interposed curtain, and nuts 13 turning on the bolts.
The fixture 9, Figs. 1 and 5, includes a body secured by clamps 14 to the free edge of the curtain in the same manner as the clamps of the member 8, and spring pressed jaws 15 having bearings 16 mounted on a hinge pin 17 extending between the clamps of the member 9 parallel to the curtain rod. The jaws 15 are pressed toward each other by a spring 18 encircling the pin 17 and connected at its opposite ends'respectively to the bearings of the jaws. The jaws are semi-cylindrical and are designed to clamp the vertical rod of a yoke associated with some cars to which the free edge of the curtain provided with the jaws is to be attached. One of the aws 15 is provided with a suitable grab handle 19 and the other with a horn 20, the handle 19 and horn 20 projecting in advance of the jaws 15 and diverging outwardly in order to engag the rod with which the jaws engage, in advance of the jaws and cause the jaws to separate. The object of the spring pressed jaws is to automatically release when the cars are uncoupled and the trainman has neglected to detach the free edge of the diaphragm curtain of one car from the other car.
The fixture 9 per 86 forms no part of this invention.
The fixture which is constructed to cooperate with either of the curtain fixtures 8 or 9, comprises a hook for receiving the grab handle of the fixture 8 and a yoke for receiving the jaws 15 of the fixture 9. As here shown the fixture comprises a base plate 21 adapted to be secured as by screws 22 to the car and having a hook 23 projecting therefrom for receiving the grab handle of the fixture 8 and also having a yoke 24 pivoted thereto, the yoke being here shown as pivoted at 25 to the base of the hook in position to be swung from either side of the hook to the other the pivot 25 extending vertically through the base of the hook. The yoke 24 is also pivoted to conform to the movement of thecurtain due to swaying of the cars as will be understood by those skilled in the art.
By equipping a car with my fixture, it can be coupled to other cars having either the class of curtain fixtures shown in Fig. 2 or the class shown in Fig. 4.
What I claim is: v
1. A fixture for diaphragm curtains of car vestibules comprising a member adapted to be permanently secured to the car and having means for coacting with the grab handles associated with some diaphragm curtains, and means for coacting with spring pressed jaws associated with other diaphragm curtains, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A fixture for securing the free edges of the diaphragm curtains of car vestibules to the vestibule of another car, including a member adapted to be secured to the latter car and having a hook, and a yoke for receiving respectively the grab handles associated with some diaphragm curtains, and the spring pressed jaws associated with other diaphragm curtains, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A fixture for securing the free edges of the diaphragm curtains of car vestibules to the vestibule of another car, including a member adapted to be secured to the latter car and having a hook, and a pivoted yoke for receiving respectively the grab handles associated with some diaphragm curtains and the spring pressed jaws associated with other diaphragm curtains, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A fixture for securing the free edges of the diaphragm curtains of car vestibules to the vestibule of another car, including a member adapted to be secured to the latter car and having a hook, and a pivoted yoke for receiving respectively the grab handles associated with some diaphragm curtains, and the spring pressed jaws associated with other diaphragm curtains, the pivot of said yoke extending vertically through the base of the hook, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 18th day of November, 1912.
EDWARD F. CHAFFEE.
