SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,412, dated. February 5, 1889'.

Be. it known that I, DEWITT lussn'rr, a citizen of thclfnited States, residing at'iVoonsocket, in the county of Sanborn and Territo ry of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (ar-(imiplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in thcart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to car-coiuilings; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, whereby the train-men may couple or unconple the cars without going" between them.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the ends of two cars provided with couplings according to this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of one of the cars.
Each car has a bumper, A, centrally secured to its end, and "provided with a pocket, a, for the link.
B is the'link, and is a link-pin, which passes through each of the bumpers A and se cures the link in position. The upper part of pin C is secured to the crossbar D, to the ends of which are secured the guii'le-rods E by the nuts 2. The said guide-rods are adapted to slide vm-tically through holes in the bumper on each side of the pocket a; and D is a cross bar secured to the lower ends of the said guide-bars by the nuts 6. threaded, so that the said nuts c 6 may be screwed upon them.
F is a long rod projecting; upwardly from the top of the pin 0 and supported by the brackets 1*", secured to the frame of the car. A handle, f, is provided at the top of rod F, so that the pin may be operated from the roof of the car.
G G are chains or cords which are secured to the stud g, which projects from the pin 0. These chains are carried over the pulleys II, journaled in the bracket 11., which is secured to the end of the car some distance above the top of the pin. Each chain is provided with an end ring, i, and each end is supported by a bracket, I, attached to the end of the car close to the side. \Vhen the chain is pulled, so as to raise the pin 0 and uncouple the cars, the ring i and the end of the chain are allowed to hang down, as indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 2.
\Vhat I claim is In a car-coupling, the combination of the bumper, the vertical guide-rods working in the sides of the said bumper, the upper and in presence of two witnesses.
