FEATHER HOLDER AND SUPPORT.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAOMI Fonon, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feather Holders and Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for hold ing feathers upon ladies hats, and for like purposes, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
Much difliculty has heretofore been experienced in supporting feathers upon ladies hats, owing to the fragile nature of the feathers, and likewise to the fragile nature of the structure or material of the hat, rendering it very difficult to fasten feathers firmly to the hat without injury either to the hat or to the feathers, and it is the object of the present invention to provide a simply constructed device which may be readily attached to the hat and which will hold the feathers without injury either to the hat fabric material or to the feather, and which may be readily detached when required, or moved from one hat to another, or applied to hold feathers of different kinds without the destruction of any portion of the device.
The improved device is illustrated in its preferred form in the drawings, and in the drawings thus employed, Figure l is a perspective view of one of the improved devices in its simpler form, or the form employed for holding a single or a number of the feathers by their butt ends only. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved device in the form which will be employed for not only holding the feathers by their butt ends but likewise for supporting them at an interi'nediate point.

terially increased. The plate 10 is provided with a plurality of perforations spaced apart, generally four of the perforations being employed, but any number may be used as required. The plate 10 withits serrated edges downwardly will be located upon the hat represented conventionally at 12, at the point where the feathers are to be supported, and may be located at any desired point upon the hat, and any number of the plates may be employed, according to the number of feathers used in the trimming.
The small plate 10 is supported or connected to the hat preferably by U-shaped wires 18 passed by their side members through two of the perforations in the plate and after passing through the fabric of the hat bent in opposite directions, as shown, to clench the wires and thus support the plate firmly on the hat. By this means the plate may be connected to the hat fabric at any point desired, and by loosening the members 13 the butt ends of the feathers represented at 14, may be inserted beneath the plate, and then the plate clamped upon the hat with any degree of firmness, and thus firmly hold the feather in position without injury either to the feather or to the hat.
The plate in its simpler form as above described may be employed upon any hat of any quality, and is adapted equally for the highest price or the lowest price hat and feathers. In Fig. 2 is shown the form of the device which will be employed when the feathers are to be supported not only at their butt ends but likewise at intermediate points thereof. The plate 10 is the same in all the structures, and in the structure shown in Fig. 2 the wires are employed and arranged as follows. A single wire 15 is bent into U- shape and its terminals thrust through two of the plate apertures at diagonally opposite corners thereof and then bent in opposite directions. Two other wires are bent into U-shape and interlocked at their bights as shown at 17, and one side of each as at 2l22 thrust through the remaining apertures and the terminals extended in opposite directions, while the other sides 1819 of the wires are directed at right angles to the plate and bent into a safety pin like structure as shown at 20. The oppositely extended terminals will be clenched after being passed through the hat material, as before described. The wires will be concealed among the backs of the feathers, and will not be exposed to view, as the sides 1819 and the clamp device 20 will be arranged rearwardly of the feathers, and slightly covered by the trimming of the hat as will be understood.
It will be obvious that a very simply constructed and ellieient device is thus produced, which may be readily applied to hats of various forms and sizes, and will firmly support the feathers in position, and prevent their displacement when in use, and will also support the feathers from the action of the wind or currents of air which are so liable to misplace trimmings of this charactor.
The wire and plate portions of the improved device may be of any gage and of any quality of metal, and may be colored or japanned or otherwise coated or protected, to render its appearance imperceptible.

A device of the class described com prising a base plate having perforations, a holding wire bent into U-shape with its side members passed through said perforations and adapted to be inserted through a supporting material and extended laterally, whereby means are provided for mounting a feather upon said supporting material, and a supporting member formed from wire bent into U-shape intermediate its ends with the side members interlocked above the plate and the terminals at one side passed through apertures in the base and the terminals at the other side bent into a detachable feather clasping device.
