HOLDER FOR CROSSED FLAGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK F. MAR- AND, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Northport, county of Suffolk, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Crossed Flags, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means whereby crossed flags used for decorative purposes may be easily, quickly and securely fastened to any solid surface without the aid of tools of any kind.
A further object of the invention is to do away with the usual method of driving a nail through the flagstaffs, or of tying them together, when it is desired to cross flags. and secure them to any solid surface.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder of this character requiring no special tools to attach to a solid surface and which can be attached by a person without special skill or training.
While a preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that various changes and alterations can be made in the arrangement, positioning and construction of the several parts without departing from the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention showing the flags in dotted lines and the staffs in position; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the invention; Fig. 3 is a side view of one arm; Fig. 4 is an end view showing one of the receptacles for the flag-staff; Figs. 5 and 6 are views of a modified form of the invention and Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the strip 1 before being bent, showing in dotted lines the bend in the center and the ends 4: and 5.
Similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the form in the accompanying drawings, the holder consists of a strip 1 of any suitable resilient material bent at approximately the center upon itself in such a manner that the two ends form arms 2 and 3 extending upward in opposite directions at approximately right angles to each other, the two arms 2 and 3 being bent back upon themselves on opposite sides and their ends 4 and 5 folded about the straight edge 6 of sopies .of this patent may be obtained. for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner-pi ratents,
the original bend of the strip 1. The outer ends 7 and 8 of the arms 2 and 3 are formed into tubular receptacles 9 and 10 having longitudinal openings 11 and 12 in the outer faces. At the point where the arms 2 and 3 join a suitable fastening device 13, such as a tack, immovably secured thereto, is provided for insertion into the surface on which it is desired to place the flags. The flags 14 and 15 are shown in dotted lines and the crossed staffs 16 and 17 pass through the tubular receptacles 9 and 10.
A modified form of the invention is shown in Figs. 5 and 6 in which the arms 2 and 3 are extended downward and provided at their lower ends 18 and 19 with second tubular receptacles 20 and 21 extending outward from the arms 2 and 3 respectively and parallel to the upper ends of the arms 3 and 2 respectively.
'I claim 1. A holder for crossed flags formed by bending a single piece of resilient material to form a central portionprovided with means for attaching it to the surface on which it is desired to place the flags and to form arms extending outwardly and upwardly from the central portion in opposite directions having their ends bent back on themselves to form receptacles to receive and hold the crossed flag-staffs.
2. A holder for crossed-flags formed by bending a single piece of resilient'material to form a central portion provided with 'means for attaching it to the surface on which it is desired to place the flags and to form arms extending outwardly and upwardly from the central portion in opposite directions having their ends bent back on themselves to form receptacles to receive and hold the crossed flag staffs, said receptacles being made expansible by splitting their outer faces longitudinally.
3. A holder for crossed flags consisting of a central portion provided with means for attaching it to the surface on which it is desiredto place the'flags and arms extending outwardly and upwardly from the central portion in opposite directions provided at their ends with expansible receptacles to receive and hold the crossedflag-stafl's.
