GARBAGE-CAN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. Osnonn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Clarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of West Vir 'nia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
.My invention relates to improvements in garbage cans and the like, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrange ments of parts herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved receptacle for garbage, otlal, and other waste roducts, for use both inside and outside of uildings. It is particularly adapted to the needs of private families, hotels, restaurants, and hospitals, but I do not limit its use, as it can also be used to an equal advantage although probably to a lesser extent, in office buildings, stores, factories, and other places where it is necessary to collect and temporarily store waste products, for the purpose of preventing insanitary conditions and the danger of spontaneous combustion.
It is well known that the customary way of disposing'of household garbage is to collect it in small vessels, and from time to time deposit their contents into a garbage recep' tacle, that is usually on the outside of the building, where odors arising therefrom may pass off into the air. The collection at times is very carelessly done. The refuse will often be left exposed in open buckets or open vessels until decomposition or decay takes lace, and attention is turned to it by the oul odors that arise. In household kitchens, the practice of leaving open buckets of garbage often results in the attraction of flies, insects and vermin.
The main object of my invention is to provide a garbage can which has a hinged cover pivoted in such a manner that it may be raised by foot pressure, thereby permitting the use of both hands in transmitting the garbage into or removing the garbage from the receptacle.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device in which the raising of the lid by foot power is accomplished through a sim 1e combination of levers which adds very ittle expense to the ordinary can, but which admirably serves the purpose intended.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whieh- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device. Fig. 3 is a bottom View of the device, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a modified form of the device.
In carrying out my invention, I may make use of an outer can body A of the ordinary cylindrical form provided with the usual bail B. At the bottom of the can body I arrange the four legs a, b, 0 and (Z. The legs a. and c are connected by means of a transverse cross bar (2 while the legs (2 and b are connected by the similar bar f, these two bars being secured together at their intersection g.
The cover C is provided with the usual handle 0'. One edge of the cover has a Y- shaped yoke I), the central leg (1? of the Y- shaped yoke being curved downwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The yoke is pivotally secured to a pair of lugs or cars l) and E on the can body by means of a pivotpin K.
The means by which the cover is operated consists of a U shaped bar F which passes through openings in the legs a and 0 underneath the can body. One end of the U shaped rod F is provided with an eye 7'. This end of the lever is connected with the member (Z by means of a link G, the eyes g and g of the link engaging the eyes of the U shaped rod F and the eye I! of the downwardly curved member (1 respectively.
The outer receptacle is arranged to contain an inner receptacle ll having a bail h. This inner receptacle may be a bucket of the usual shape.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The can is placed in a kitchen or room, or in any other place where it is needed, and the cover G is normally in a closed position. IVith the cover closed, the free end of the U shaped lever F is raised slightly from the floor. By pressing down on this portion of the lever, the link G will'be caused to move downwardly, thereby causing the raising of the cover into the position shown in Fig. 1. It will be noticed that in this position, the free end of the foot lever F rests on the floor, which forms a support for the foot of the operator. The can or bucket H is then in a position to receive the garbage. Both hands of the operator are left free for the transfer of the garbage into the inner receptacle, the cover G remaining raised as long as the foot lever F is kept pressed to the floor. It will be observed that in the raised position of the cover, with the e' e F, the eye (i and the pivotal pin K in ine, the cover C will have a forward inclination so that on the release of the lever, the weight of the cover will cause it to descend, and close the up er receptacle. There is no danger, therefiire, of the cover being swung back behind the point where it will fall by its own weight-when the-pressure is taken from the foot lever,
thus preventing any danger of the cover remaimng open through neglect of the servants, or other users of the receptacle to close it.
In Fig. 4: l have shown a modified form of the device in which the inner receptacle H has a perforated bottom it which rests upon the brackets a attached to the interior of the can body A. This form is useful for dry garbage, the liquid portions of such garbage filtering out through the perforations in the bottom and remaining in the outer can A from whence it can be removed as desired.
I claim:
1. In a garbage can, a cylindrical can body provided with legs, twe of said legs esoaae being on diametrically opposite edges of said cylindrical can bod and having openings therethrough, a U shaped foot lever rotatably mounted in the openings in said legs, a cover pivotally connected to said can body and having a rearwardly projecting arm and connections between one portion of said U shaped foot lever and the rearwardly projecting arm on said cover.

In a garbage can, a can body provided with legs, two of said le 5 being on diametrically opposite edges 0 said can body and having openings therethrough, a U-shaped foot lever rotatably mounted in the openings in said. legs, one of the arms of said U- shaped lever being normally a short distance above the floor, a cover pivotally connected to the can body and having a rearwardly projecting arm, a link pivotally connected to one arm of said U-shaped foot lever and to said rearwardly projecting arm, the said parts being so arranged that when the lever is pressed to the-floor the pivotal connections of said link and the pivot ofsaid cover will lie in a straight line with the cover ina clined forward, whereby when pressure is relieved from the foot lever the cover will return to its normal position by gravity.
