Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2K5, 191%.
Application filed April 15, 1915. Serial No. 21,546.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP J. HAAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, county of Douglas, and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Combination Portable Sanitary Closet and Seat, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portable sanitary closets, and has for its objects the following, first, the production of a portable sanitary closet in which any disinfecting or incinerating preparation or material may be used after each stool or dispensed with'at the will of the user, second, the production of a combination portable sanitary closet and seat, or taboret, whereby the former is eifec tually concealed by the latter when the for mer is not in use, and, third, the production of a portable sanitary closet which is vented to the room, or dwelling, exterior, and adapted for removal from one room to another, or from one location to another for stool purposes. Further objects of my in vention will be mentioned and described in the specification following.
On the drawings, Figure 1 is a section in elevation through the closet, seat, or taboret, and vent pipe; Fig. 2 is a plan view of vent pipe and securing collar; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the settee.
Similar numerals refer to similar members and parts of members throughout the several views on the drawings.
On the drawings, 1 designates the Walls, or partition, of a house, dwelling or structure, within which is arranged a vent pipe 2 in communication with a room of the structure and leading to the exterior of the room or structure. The numeral 3 desi nates an excrement and excreta receptacle open at the top thereof and provided with a vent opening 4 for communication with the vent pipe 2. For detachably connecting the vent opening 4 and the vent pipe 2 a collar 5, loosely sleeved upon the end of vent pipe 2, is provided, and the end of the vent opening thimble 4 is provided with an outwardly projecting collar pin 7 for operation within the diagonal collar slot 6. The collar 5 is rotatable upon the vent pipe 2 to enable the engagement of the slot 6 for securing purposes, and the thimble 4 is readily detached from such engagement by a withdrawl of the slot 6 from engagement with the pin 7. The receptacle 3 is provided with. a handle 8 attached thereto adjacent the bottom thereof, and a bail 9 secured thereto inthe usual or any suitable manner. The numeral 10 designates a wood seat provided with the usual opening and hinged to the receptacle, engaging the receptacle top at the rubber gasket 11 annularly arranged upon the receptacle top. to seal the joint between. the seat and the receptacle. The numeral 12 designates a seat cover hinged to the receptacle and provided with a spring seat of metal, or other suitable material, and secured. thereto in any suitable manner, the numeral 20 designating the spring seat or plate. To seal the joint be tween the seat 10 and. the cover 12 a rubber gasket 13 is provided and secured to the under side of the cover 12 and adapted to penetrate, or seat, within a gasket groove 12 formed in the upper face of the seat 10:
When the receptacle 3 is detached from the vent pipe 2 to evacuate the contents thereof, or for any other purpose, it is desirable to close the vent opening 4 thereof. For this purpose the vent opening cap 14 is provided to seal said receptacle vent opening. The cap 14 is large enough to, slip over the vent pipe opening 4 and may be rotated thereon for placing thepin 7 within the slot 15 diagonally formed in the. cap 14 for securing same to the receptacle vent and to seal same. The numeral 17 designates a vent pipe thimble, or collar, and the numeral 18 designates a settle, or taboret, made of wood or any other suitable material, and open at one side thereof. Itis adapted to serve both as a means of concealment of the closet receptacle 3 when the same is not in use and also as a means of tightly sealing the cover 12 and the seat 10 against the escape of odors from the receptacle interior. Beneath the seat portion of the settle 18 a bent leaf spring 19 is secured thereto adapted to press upon the spring seat, or plate, 20 secured; to the upper face of the cover 12, as heretofore mentioned, the weight of the seat, or settle, 18 forcing the rubber gasket 13 tightly into the gasket groove 12 and forming a tight joint.
The numeral 21 designates a three leaf hinge upon which the seat 10 and the seat cover 12 are mounted and secured, respectively, to hinge members 24 and 23,the latter being of l. formation to engage the upper face of the cover 12. The hinge 21 is provided also with the member 25 adapted for arrangement within the hinge socket 22, a member secured to the body of the receptacle 3 adjacent its top and above the vent opening 4, and open at the top thereof to receive the hinge member 25 without securing means except the support of the socket member 22.
When my improved closet is used with an incinerating or strong disinfecting material the interior thereof is preferably lined With enamel or any other material or facing not subject to attack and injury, or destruction, by the incinerator or disinfectant. If the receptacle 3 is formed of porcelain, or certain earthen wares, such enameling becomes unnecessary, and necessary only when made of most metals suitable for the purpose. 1
Obviously, a separate receptacle or container may be introduced within the receptacle 8 to receive the stool, if desired, without departingfrom the spirit of my invention, and under some circumstances the use of a removable receptacle Within the a may be otherwise disposed of in that re speet. By the use of the three leaf hinge and the hinge socket herein described and shown I am enabled to rapidly mount and dismount the seat 10 and the seat cover 12 secured to said hinge.
I claim 1. In a portable closet, the combination with a self supporting excrement receptacle provided with a vent pipe and a top cover movably mounted thereon, of a movable and independent casing member detached from said excrement receptacle and provided with an open bottom and an opening in the wall thereof, said wall opening being traversed by said receptacle vent pipe; and
a resilient member carried by said casing member and adapted to engage said receptacle top cover whereby the latter seals said receptacle.
2. In a portable closet, the combination of a self supporting excrement receptacle provided with a vent pipe and a top cover movably mounted thereon, a movable and independent casing member inclosing said excrement receptacle, said casing member being detached from said receptacle, freely movable independently thereof and provided with an open bottom and an opening in the wall thereof, said casing wall opening being traversed by said receptacle vent pipe, and a resilient member interposed be tween said top cover and said casing member and pressed by the latter whereby said top cover seals said excrement receptacle.
3. In a portable closet, the combination with a self supporting excrement receptacle provided with a vent pipe and a top cover hinged thereto, of a movable and independent casing member detached from said excrement receptacle and provided with an open bottom and an opening in the Wall thereof, said wall opening extending from the bottom of said wall to a point intermediate the top and bottom of said casing member, said wall opening being traversed by said receptacle vent pipe; and a resilient member carried by said casing member and adapted to engage said receptacle top cover whereby the latter seals said receptacle.
In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 13th day of April,
PHILIP J. HAAS.
