J. 1 Applictionugnst 1s, 1934, serialV No.` 739,674 'Y lolaim. (01.220436) *Y This invention relates to a garbage container and has for an object to provide an improved means of temporarily receivingand storing garbage and of thereafter disposing of the same Without the necessity of lifting the container either in Still a further object of this invention is to prio-l vide a garbage and refuse container especially adaptable to collecting garbage and refuse in apartments and institutions such as hospitals, and for thereafter discharging the refuse and garbage to the bottom thereof. y
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a garbage container with means for positively opening and closing the bottom thereof and further With means for supporting it for easy transportation.
With the foregoing and other objects in vieW, as will hereinafter become apparent, this invention comprises the constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, hereinafter set forth, disclosed and shown on the accompanying drawing. In this drawing,
Figure 1 is a front view of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same,
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
'Ihere is shown at I0 the garbage container or barrel constituting this invention. This garbage container or barrel I 0 includes a can II of any suitable size supported on uprights I2, the uprights I2 being supported in turn on wheels or casters I3 adapted to be rolled over any oor or suitable surface I4.
As shown, there will preferably be three supports or uprights I 2 and a corresponding number of wheels or casters I3, although a greater number may be used `if desired.
The top of the can I I is provided with a manually removable cover I5 having a handle I6. A pulling handle II 4is hinged to the can II as at I8 adjacent its bottom and may be held to the sides of the can When in inoperative position, by means the bottom of a rod 26.
of a pair of snaps I9. In order to use the handle Il it is merely released from its snaps I9 and then the garbage container I0 may be pulled over the Iioor or surface I4 on its Wheels or casters I3.`
In this manner, the garbage container It may be used as a collector for garbage or refuse in a hospital or apartment house or the like, the garbage container III being pulled along by means of the handle I'I and the garbage or refuse placed into the can I I by temporarily removing the cover I5 until the saine has been filled.
When the can I I is lled the garbage container I0 is then brought to any convenient place for discharging the refuse or garbage, as for instance, a suitably located garbage chute leading to an incinerator or other means of disposing thereof.
A pair of hinged doors 20 arehingedly secured as at 2| and form the bottom of the can I I. Each door 2G is provided with a pair of bosses 22 and the adjacent bosses 22 of each door 2i) is pivotally secured by pins 23 to a pair of links 2. The links 2d are in turn pivotally `hinged as at 25 to This rod 26 is slidably supported against the side of the can I I by a pair of U-shaped brackets 2'I, and is held in its uppermost position by means of a snap clamp 28 coop- I i erating with an enlarged handle 29 formed on Y side of the can and then the rods 2E are allowed to drop whereby the links 24 allow the doors 20. to open about their hinges 2l and discharge the contents of the can through the bottom.
After the can has thusbeen emptied the rods 26 are drawn upvvardly'by their handle members 25 which are again snapped into the snap 28 to securely hold the doors 20 in closed position.
The advantages of this invention should be apparent from the foregoing description. When made in a small size the garbage can IQ may be kept at any suitablelocation for receiving refuse or garbage as in a home or individual apartment. Then, when it has been filled up it may be pulled by means of a handle I'I on its wheels or casters I3 to a suitable place for disposing of its contents, at which place the handles 29 are pulled out of the snap 2B so as to open the doors 20 and discharge the contents thereof.
When made in a large size it may be used asa portable garbage container or wagon and may be used to collect garbage in hospitals, apartment houses, or other like institutions.
The novel features and the operation of this device will be apparent from the foregoing description. While the device has been shown and the structure described in detail, it is obvious that this is not to be considered limited to the exact form disclosed and that changes may be made therein within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus set forth and'disclosed the nature of this invention', vwhatis claimed'is:
A garbage and refuse receptacle comprising a can, a plurality of supports secured to said can! adjacent the bottom thereof, a caster wheelsecured to the bottom of each'supp ort,` ar handle member hinged to one side of said can adjacent the bottom thereof for pulling said garbage can about, snap means secured to the side of said can adapted to hold said handle when in inoperative position, a pair of doors oppositely hinged in the bottom of said can, and means for positively opening said doors downwardly to a garbage disposing position and for positively securing said doors when in upward closed position, said means comprising a pair of flexible rods, bracket means on opposite sides of said can slidably securing said rod thereagainst, a handle member on the top end of each rod, a U-shaped bracket member for receiving'said handle secured to thev side of said can to support said handle in uppermost position, said {KJV-shaped bracket member also allowing the handle` to be sprung outwardly from said can, a pair of-links hingedly secured to the bottom of said rod, each door having a pair of bosses projecting therefrom, and pin means pivotally securing said bosses to said links.
