Be it known that I, SEVERIN B. ANDERSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Lapwai, in the county of Nez Perce and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein Checks or Stops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in harness attachments', and the invention has for its primary object a simple construction of adjustable rein check or stop which may be easily secured to the main and cross'lines of harness without in any wise weakening the same, the device when applied preventing the reins from becoming tangled underneath the end of the tongue, and also preventing the horses from pulling the cross line buckles through the rings of the back pads, it being well Y known that with the ordinary arrangements of harness, the cross line buckles often become caught in the back pad rings and cannot be pulled back, thereby causing accidents.

It is well known that riveting parts to different portions of harness by inserting the rivets directly through the leather, tends to weaken the reins or other parts, and as above stated, it is the primary object of my invention to provide a rein check or stop which may be adjustably secured to the reins without the necessity of inserting rivets directly through the line, the latter being left entirely intact.

With these and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

My improved rein check or stop comprises two preferably substantially circular members l that are substantially alike in construction and which are formed at diametrically opposite portions with recesses 2 of a width and depth to receive the line between them. In addition to the recesses 2, the sections or clamping members l ofthe check device are formed, in said recesses with spurs or protuberances 3 which are designed to be partially embedded in the line, after the two parts have embraced the line and are secured together, as by screws 4 or similar fastening devices extending therethrough. It is to be particularly noted that the screws are located outside the plane of the side edges of the line and that the device may be securely fastened at the desired point on the outside line, or cross line withput punching any holes entirely through the mes.

vFrom the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the practical operation of my improved adjustable rein check or stop is believed to be obvious. In the practical application of the device, the ring-like sections l are preferably placed several inches back of the hame ring on the outside line and from say eight to ten inches back of the spreader strap ring on the inside or spreader line, and thereby preventing the lines becoming tangled at the end of the tongue and also preventing the horses from pulling the cross line buckles through the back pad rings.

The two parts or sections l, when in assembled relation, form an attractive and ornamental ring and are provided at corresponding points with web portions 5 which may be more or less ornamental, as shown, and in which the holes for the screws t are formed, the said web portions being segmental in character.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

1. A device of the character described, comprising two ring-like sections arranged to clamp a line between them and formed outside the margin of the line with corresponding screw holes.

2. A device of the character described,

comprising sections designed to clamp a line y between .them and formed with corresponding recesses for the accommodation of the line and being also formed outside of the side margins of said recesses with corresponding holes designed to receive fastening devices.

3. A device of the character described, comprising corresponding ring-like sections designed to clamp a line between them and formed with webs and with recesses in said webs and also with diametrically o posite recesses, the sections being further ormed outside the side margins of the recesses in the webs with holes adapted to receive fastening devices.

4. A device of the character described comprising corresponding ring-like sections designed to clamp a line between them and formed with flat opposing faces, said sections being formed with webs and with recesses in the opposing' faces of said webs and also in the opposing faces at diametrically opposite points to the recesses of the webs, the sections being further formed outside of the side margins of the recesses of the webs with holes in said webs and adapted to receive fastening devices.
