REIN CHECK 0R STOP. APPLICATION FILED 00123, 1905.

THE-NORRIS PETERS ca., WASHINGTON, n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEVER-IN B. ANDERSON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO NELS NELSON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
REIN CHECK OR STOP.
Patented Jan. 22, 1907.
Application filed October 28, 1905. Serial No. 284,082.
To at 11/72/0711, it 711/07 concern.
Be it known that I, Snvnnnv B. ANnERsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, (but having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States of America) and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein Checks or Stops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a check or stop adapted to be attached to a rein which will limit the movement of the rein to which it is attached in one direction; and the primary object thereof is to produce a device of this type which will be simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, in which.
like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a view illustrating my improvements as applied to a rein. -Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan .view of the present invention. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig.2. Fig. A is a view in perspective, showing more clearly the manner of attaching my improvement to a rein; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line X X of Fig. 4.
As is well known, a horse unless checked will often draw the reins forward, and such slack rein is liable to catch under the ends of the shafts or tongue of the vehicle,-and thereby cause the driver great inconvenience. My invention aims to provide an attachment which will overcome this objectionable feature in reins as they are now constructed, and in the carrying out thereof I attach to each rein a check or stop 1 at a point a little to the rear of the guide-rings 2 of the harness.
As both checks or stops are of identical construction, a description of one will suffice. This consists of a rim portion 1, which has a depending edge flange cut out at opposite points to provide seats 3 for the rein,
which is designated by reference-numeral 4. The rim is connected by a depressed bar or web portion 5, which is adapted to engage in an even manner the rein, and suitable fastening means, as screws 6, are passed through the rein and have threaded engagement in apertures 6 of the web portion 5, whereby the check or stop is secured in position.
In operation the check is attached to the rein a little to the rear of the guide-ring or the like, so that the horse will be allowed to glove his head with a limited amount of free- My invention can be used in conjunction with a checkrein or as substitute therefor, as will be obvious.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make alterations in the details of construction thereof as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, 1s
1. A device of the type set forth comprising a rim portion formed with opposite sockets, and means projecting through the device for securing the same to a rein.
2. A device of the type set forth comprising a rim portion and a transverse depressed bar or web formed with apertures, the rim having an edge flange which is cut out to form sockets or seats, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with a rein and a guide through which said rein passes, a check or stop removably secured to said rein and hav ing extensions engaging and projecting beyond the side edges of the rein, whereby twisting of the said check or stop is prevented, said check or stop being arranged to engage said guide for limiting movement of the rein in one direction.
4. In combination with a rein and a guide therefor, of a rein check or stop comprising an element removably attached to one face of the rein and having downwardly and outwardly projecting portions engaging the side edges of the rein to prevent twisting of the check or stop, saidcheck or stop being arranged to engage said guide for limiting movement of the rein in one direction.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 13th day of October, 1905.
