WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.I To all 'whom` it -may'concernl Be it known that I, LIVYL. BARRIGK, a
citizen of the United States, residing' at.
Moundsville, in the county of Marshall and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vrenches, oflwhich the following is a specification. v 'l j .This invention relates to wrenches, and
its primary. object is to provide a Wrench of simple and durable construction adapted for use either as a 4pipe wrench, or a bolt and n-ut wrench.
A .furtherobject of the invention is, -to provide a wrench capable off being easily manipulated to adjust the movable jaw, and
provided with effective means for locking,
vention. Fig. 2 is a similar view,vpartly in y longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective ofthe sliding box or casing employed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe pivoted bail-forming an element of 'the de vice, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line mof Fig. 4;
The reference numeral -1 designates the shank or handle of the wrench formed along the lower edge with ratchet teeth 2, and provided at one end with; a fixedjaw 3,
the face of which vis formed with ratchetA teeth 4.V 'Thej aw 3 is preferably made sepf -orribs 12 extending into the grooves 7 of arate from`the head 5 of the shank, and secured vwithin a .suitable recess of vthe vhead 'by a pin 6, or other4 securing means. The
shank or handle is provided Aon opposite sides with longitudinal grooves 7 for the purpose hereinafter described.` l
Slidably mountedupon the handle 1 is a casing 8 d ivided by partitionsv 9, into two compartments 10 and 11, the handle extending throughthe compartment 10,'.while'the other compartment 11 contain 4 s'the locking. and releasing devices. From the inner surfaces of the walls4v of thecasing 8 project oppositelyl disposed lugs the lever .is relieved.
the handle, and serv-ing to center the casing,
and guide 'it in the sliding movements.
IatentedFeh 8, 1910. Application filed- Augu-st 3, 1809. Serialy No. 511,071.
Thenumeral 13 designates the movable jaw of the wrench, provided with an integral arm 1 4 extending through a strap or keeperl projecting from the head. 5 of the handle, and 'into the compartment 11 of the casing 8. The end of the arm 14'within vthe casing, is recessed on opposite sides to provide a tongue 16, fitting within a slot formed 1n 'the short arm of. a bell-crank Alever 17, andsaid arm .14 is pivotally secured to the lever 17 by a pin 18.
The casing 8 is provided on each side with a central longitudinal 'slot 19 to receive a bail 20, the arms of which embrace the lever 17 andare pivoted thereto by a pin 21.
The cross bar of the bail 20 is formed with ratchet teeth 22, the pitch ofwlnch is op- 4*posed to that of the teeth 2, to engage the latter Aand serve as a dog to lock the movable ljaw against movement. A coil spring 28 interposed between the lever,17 and the adjacent 'partition 9, exerts an outward. pres sure upon the leverto hold the teeth of' the of the handle,- and the projecting end 2l ol' the lever is curved and flattened to afford a Vconvenient.finger-piece, by means of which the le-vermay be depressed'to compress the l spring 23, and force the bail out of engage ment with the handle.
VThe utility and operation of the wrench will be readlly understood frornthe foregoing description in connection withthe drawing, .and it iS-obvious thatwhenthelever 17A is depressed the teeth of the bal20 aredisengaged frointhe teeth 2, thus permitting the movement of the casing 8 and the adjustment of the aw 13 and further that the teeth of the bail will .automat-ically'rengage `95' the teeth of the handle when pressure upon casing, avmov'able jaw provided -with an arm pivot'ally secured to said lever, and' a toothed bail pivotally secured to saidlever. 2., A wrench comprising a toothed handle .bail normally in engagementwith the teeth provided with a fixed jaw, a casing sli'dablv mounted on said handle, a lever vvithin said casing, a movabler Jaw providedwith an arm pivotally secured to said lever, and a toothed -bail-pivotally secured to said lever, the arms. of sai-d bail embracing said lever'and extendingon opposite sides of said handle.
3. 'A Wrench comprising a handle formed ivith Yratcnet'teeth and provided With`a fixed Jaw, a casing slidably mounted on said handle, andV divlded into two'compartments, a'
spitting-pressed lever Within one' of said compartments, a-bail pivotally secured to sa1d lever and 'provided With ratchet teeth cowith ratchet teeth and provided with a fixed jaw, a casing slidably mounted on said handle, and divided into twocompartments, a sprlng-pressed lever Within one of said compart-ments,-a bail pivotally secured to said lever and provided with ratchet teeth eooperating with those of the handle, a movable jaw provided With an arm extending Within said casing and pvotally secured to said lever, a strap orkeeper for said arm,
and means for guiding the sliding movement of said-casing comprising projections on the' Walls of' the casing extending int-o grooves formedon Opposite sides of' said handle.
5. A Wrench comprising a ,handle formed with ratchet teeth and provided with a fixed jaw, a casing slidably-m'ounted on said handle and divided into tivo compartments and slotted on opposite sides, a spring-pressed lever Within `one of said compartments, a bail vpivotally secured to said lever andprovided Withratchet teeth cooperating with those of the handle, said bail fittingwithin the slots in the easing, a movable jaw provided With an'- arm extending Within the casing and pivotall)7 secured to said lever,
and a strap or keeper for said arm projecting from thehandl'e.
In testimony whereof' I afiix my signature" in presence of tivo Witnesses. LivY LBARRICK.
