To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANsoM Y. Bovnn, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches of the type in which an adjustable jaw is moved relative to a fixed jaw by the manipulation of a nut, worm or analogous appliance and it has for its objects to provide a simple mechanism which adapts the wrench for use on cylindrical as well as angular objects, to provide means whereby the gripping action of the cooperative jaws is greatly intensilied, and to provide a ratchet connection between the jaw-stock and the handle whereby the wrench may be operated in either direction by the action of a pawl on ratchet teeth or by which the handle may be xed relative to the stock at any desired angle.
The above and other objects of minor importance will be fully described in the following specifcation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which Figure l represents a sectional elevation of the wrench, Fig. 2, a longitudinal section taken along the line 2-2 Fig. 1, Fig. 3, an elevation looking in the direction of the arrow a, Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, a perspective view of one of the dogs employed in the construction.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 2 indicates the jaw-stock composed of an oblong body portion 7 which has a longitudinal guide-way 3 for the movable jaw 4, and which is Aintegral with a jaw 5 and a ratchet disk 6 projecting oppositely from one of its ends. The movable jaw 4 consists of a carrier 9 which is slidably fitted in the guide way 3 and which has in one of its sides `a longitudinal groove 10 for the reception of a feather `12 extending along the corresponding side of the guide way. The carrier 9 is provided at its lower surface, with a series of ratchet teeth which are operatively engaged by the thread of aworm 13 which is rotatably mounted in an opening in the lower portion of the jaw stock by means of a screw pin 14. Movably fitted between the parallel sides of the carrier 9 is an L shaped member 10, the shorter arm 10EL of which is disposed opposite the xed jaw 5. The long arm 10c of the member 10, which extends between the sides of the carrier, is pivotally connected therewith near its extremity by means of a transversely disposed pin 15 and the said member is yieldingly supported upon a coiled spring 16 which rests upon the bottom of the carrier and projects into a recess in the end of the arm. The arm 10a of the member 10, whose outer surface is beveled, is straddled by a substantially V shaped cap 17, the legs of which are formed near their outer extremities and upon their inner surfaces with transverse notches 17a which, when the parts are assembled, are occupied respectively by a correspondingly shaped ridge 101 on the inner surface of the j aw-member 10a and by a similarly formed projection 18a on the free extremity of a leaf-spring 18 which occupies a groove 10e in the beveled outer surface of the member 10a. The outer working faces of the cap 17 are respectively plain and serrated so that by reversing its position upon the member 10, it will adapt the wrench for use on cylindrical objects such as pipes as well as on nuts and other angular parts, and the angular space between the legs of the cap 17 is made suiiiciently wide to permit the latter, when in place upon the member 10, to be moved against the spring 18 by pressure upon its outer surface, until its opposite leg is released from the ridge 10d which in coaction with the projection 18a on the spring 18 holds the cap in its adjusted position.
The operating handle 19 of the wrench has a bifurcated extremity, the legs of which straddle the ratchet disk 6 to which they are pivotally secured by means of a pin 20 disposed concentrically with relation to the disk. Movably mounted upon a pin 23 which is transversely secured between the legs of the furcate extremity of the handle below the disk, are two dogs 21 each comprising a segmental shank 21a placed between a milled thumb-piece 21c and a collar 21d which is apertured to surround the pin 23. The collar 21d is offset to one side of the shank 212L to provide a recess which when the parts are assembled, is occupied by the free extremities extend into notches 21g inV the two dogs 21. The two springs are placed in different planes so that they'may move past each other when the dogs with which they are connected are disengaged from the ratchet teeth which are V shaped not only to permit the operation of the handle in either direction, but also to render them strong and durable.
In the operation of my wrench the cap 1s adjusted on the member 10a of the movable jaw, in accordance'with the uses to which the device is to be put, 'as has been fully explained hereinbefore, and the said jaw is moved by manipulation of the milled teeth of the worm to engage the object placed between it and the fixed jaw 5. The yielding, pivotal connection of the member 10 with the carrier 9, compels the former to more firmly grip the object by swinging inwardly at the upper portion of its working face, thus preventing slipping and damaging the corners of nuts or other angular objects. When the two dogs are in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet disk, it is held in fixed relation to the j aw stock and it may readily be moved to any angle relative thereto by temporarily releasing one or the other of the two dogs.
T o adapt the handle for a ratchet movement in either direction, one of the dogs is released from the teeth of the disk by pressure upon its milled thumb-piece and it is moved about its axis until the shoulders 2lf of the dogs engage andthe respective spring has moved past the center of the handle a distance sufficient to maintain the dog in its adjusted position. When it is desired to operate the handle in the opposite direction, the other dog is released from the ratchet teeth in a similar manner with the result that the dog which was previously disengaged from the teeth is moved to resume its original position by reason of the engagement of the before mentioned shoulders.
It will thus be observed that the improved wrench as described and shown, may be used in places inaccessible to the ordinary wrench, that it may act effectively upon all objects irrespective of their exterior form, that by means of the yielding connection between the members of the movable jaw, `the'object will be firmly Agripped between the latter =and the fixed jaw and that the wrench may be operated in a limited space.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is l. In a wrench, a fixed jaw, a beveled in spaced relation to its beveled surface and having notches in the inner surfaces of its legs, and a spring secured upon the beveled surface of the movable jaw and having a projection occupying one of said notches, the said jaw having upon its other surface a projection occupying the other notch whereby said cap is held in its adjusted position.
3. In a wrench, ajaw stock having a fixed jaw anda toothed disk, a jaw movable on said stock, an operating handle pivotally secured concentric with said disk, two dogs mounted on said handle vto move about a common axis and normally engaging the teeth of the disk at opposite sides of said axis, and longitudinally and laterally deflectable springs having a `connection Vdisposed in a recess of said handle, and extending at opposite sides of a radial line passing through said axis, in engagement with said dogs, said springs being disposed in different planes to move past each other when the respective dogs are disengaged from the teeth of the disk.

In a wrench, a jaw stock having a fixed jaw and a toothed disk, a jaw movable on said stock an operating handle pivotally secured concentric with said disk, two dogs mounted on said handle to move about a common axis and normally engaging the teeth of the disk at opposite sides of said axis, and sinuate springs having a connection disposed in a recess of said handle at opposite sides of a radial line passing through said axis, in engagement with said dogs and disposed in different planes to move past each other when the respective dogs are disengaged from the teeth of the disk.
5. In a wrench, a jaw stock including a fixed jaw and a disk having peripheral, equilateral V-shaped teeth, a jaw movable on said stock, an operating handle pivotally se'- cured concentric with said disk, and spring held dogs mounted on said handle to move about a common axis and engaging said teeth at opposite side of said axis.
6. In a wrench, a jaw stock having a fixed jaw and a peripherally toothed disk, a jaw movable on said stock, an operating handle Vpivotally secured vconcentric with said disk, dogs mounted on said handle to move about a common axis, and springs disposed to resiliently maintain said dogs in engagement with the teeth of said disk at opposite sides of said axis, the said dogs having shoulders adapted to engage when one or the other is moved out of engagement with said teeth whereby the dog disengaged from the disk, is held in its adjusted position.
7. In a wrench, a jaw stock having a xed jaw and a peripherally toothed disk, a jaw movable on said disk, an operating handle having a furcate extremity straddling said disk and pivotally secured thereto in concentric relation, dogs mounted between the legs of said extremity to rotate upon a pin secured transversely thereto and engaging the teeth ofl said disk at opposite sides of said pin, and connected springs between the legs of the said extremity, projecting at their connected ends in a recess in the handle and engaging the respective dogs with their opposite extremities.
8. In a wrench, a body having a fixed jaw, and provided with a guide-way transverse to the face of' said jaw, a recessed carrier slidably fitted in said guide way, a lever fulcrumed in said recess a spring engaging one arm of the lever so as to resiliently maintain its opposite arm in cont-act with the bottom of'V the recess, and a jaw formed at right angles at the end of the last mentioned arm in opposite relation to the fixed jaw.
9. In a wrench, a jaw stock including a fixed jaw and a segment having peripheral, equilateral, V-shaped teeth, a jaw movable on said stock, an operating handle pivotally secured concentric with said segment, and spring-held dogs mounted on said handle and having V-shaped projections to enter the interdental spaces of said segment.
10. In a wrench, a jaw stock having a ixed jaw and a peripherally toothed segment, a aw movable on said stock, anoperating handle pivotally secured concentric with said segment, dogs mounted on said handle to move about a common axis, longitudinally and laterally deflectable springs having a connection disposed in a recess in the handle and extending at opposite sides of a radial line passing through said axis, in engagement with said dogs, said springs being disposed in dierent planes to move past each other when the respective dogs are disengaged from said segment, and the said dogs having shoulders adapted to engagewhen one or the other is moved out of engagement with the teeth of the segment.
11. In a wrench, a jaw stock including a peripherally toothed segment, an `operating handle pivotally secured concentric with said segment, dogs mounted on said handle to rot-ate about a common axis and to engage said segment at opposite sides of a line passing through their axis of' rotation and the pivotal axis of the segment, and laterally deflectable springs fixed at one of their ends on the said handle, their opposite ends being movably connected with the respective dogs at points disposed at opposite sides of the said line whereby when the dogs are disengaged from the segment by movement about their axis, the ends of the respective springs are carried across the line passing through the fixed end of the latter and the pivotal axis of the dogs, to maintain the latter in their adjusted position.
12. In a wrench, a jaw stock including a peripherally toothed segment, an operating handle pivotally secured concentric with said segment, dogs mounted on said handle to rotate about a common axis and to engage said segment at opposite sides of a line passing through their axis of rotation and the pivotal axis of the segment, and laterally deflectable springs fixed at one of their ends on the said handle, their opposite ends being movably connected with the respective dogs at points disposed at opposite sides of the said line, whereby when the dogs are disengaged from the segment by movement about their axis, the ends of the respective springs are carried across the line passing through the fixed end of the latter and the pivotal axis of the dogs, to maintain the latter in their adjusted position, the said dogs having shoulders adapted to engage the said handle when thus adjusted.
13. In a wrench, a jaw stock including a peripherally toothed segment, an operating handle pivotally secured concentric with said segment, dogs mounted on said handle to rotate about a common axis and to engage said segment at opposite sides of a line passing through their axis of rotation and the pivotal axis of the segment, and laterally deiiectable springs integrally connected at yone of their ends, and detachably held at said ends upon the said handle, the opposite ends of the springs being movably connected with the respective dogs at points disposed at opposite sides of the said line, whereby when the dogs are disengaged from the segment by movement about their axis, the ends of the respective springs are carried across the line passing through the fixed end of the latter and the pivotal axis of the dogs to maintain the latter in their adjusted position.
