DISPLAY-STAND.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN RosnNTHAL,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Display-Stand, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to display stands for use in displaying confectionery, cigars and the like.

One object of the invention is to provide a transparent protective closure which may be readily applied to a box containing confectionery, cigars and similar articles of merchandise, in order to protect the same from moisture, dirt, etc.

A further object is to provide a display stand upon which a box containing the merchandise may be secured and held at varying degrees of angularity, and also provided with means for supporting the lid of the box when open.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the display stand with a box of cigars in position, the lid of the box being open; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken transversely of the box and the support therefor, and showing a fragment of the upper portion of the pedestal; Fig. 3.is a fragmentary sectional elevation, viewed from the inside of the rear of the supporting rack; and Fig. i is a perspective view of the protective closure, showing a modified construction of the means for securing the same to the box and also supporting the lid of the box.

The stand comprises a base 1 having a post or standard 2 supported thereon. A disk 1 is formed at the upper end of the post 2, and may be provided with a pin 5 projecting from one face thereof. These apertures may be disposed on the are of a circle, as shown in Fig. 2, and the pin 5 is adapted to enter in one of said apertures, in order to aid in retaining the disks 4 and 10 in any adjusted position. An ear or lug 14. projects from the disk 10 and is provided with a slot 15 adapted to receive one'side 16 of the frame or rack 18 which supports the box 20 containing the merchandise. Said rack 18 in the present instance is composed of two triangular end members 21 and the wall 16. Said end members and wall are fastened together in any suitable manner, or they may all be formed from one piece of metal, suitably bent and cut into shape. A strip 22 extends longitudinally across the bottom of the rack 18, and is provided at each end with upwardly-extending plates 24, which may be riveted or otherwise attached to the ends 21. An arm 26 is swiveled to the lower side of the strip 22 by means of a rivet 27'. Said arm has an upturned portion 28 at the front end of the rack, and the other end of the arm 26 is forked at 30 to span the lug 14 on the disk 10. The upturned portion 28 aids in retaining the box 20 in its position 011 the rack 18.

In order to protect the contents of the box 20, a closure 32 may be provided. Said closure comprises a frame 34:, which is formed of a side member 35 and two end members 36. The end members may be united by means of a hollow cylindrical rod 38 having a slot along one side thereof, which receives the transparent sheet 40. This sheet may be made of glass, mica, celluloid or any other suitable material. The side 35 and ends 36 may be formed with a ledge 4-2 for supporting the transparent sheet 40. The frame 3 1 may be supported by means of brackets 14 attached to each end wall 21 of the rack 18, the rod 38 being journaled in said brackets, so that the protective closure may be tilted in order to remove the contents of the box 20 when ever desired. The box 20 may be provided with a lid 45, which will be held in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 by means of an arm 6&6 swiveled about a thumb screw 17 mounted in the wall 16.

In Fig. 4, a modified form is shown of the means for supporting the protective closure above the box containing the merchandise. The closure 32 is of the same construction as that above set forth, but the cylindrical rod 38 is journalcd in brackets 50, which are each provided with a thumbscrew 51 adapted to bear against the ends of the box 20 in order to hold said brackets firmly in position with respect to the box. Each bracket may be formed with a rearwardly-extending arm 52, having i11- wardly-extending projections 58 thereon, which support the cover 1-5. This modified form of closure and support is intended to be used as a protective means when the remainder of the display stand is not desired.

It should be understood that whereas I have illustrated my invention as applied to the display of merchandise contained in a box having a hinged cover or lid, it is also applicable for use with boxes having covers or lids which are separable therefrom.

The arrangement described for mounting the sheet of glass in the frame, which consists in inserting the upper edge of the sheet in the tubular bar 33, is considered highly advantageous, in connection with the mounting of the ends of the bar rotatably. The advantage in this construction is that there is no possibility of forming a crack between the bar and the upper edge of the plate, through which dust could enter. It also permits of the plate being readily removed and replaced if it should become broken.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination, a frame having a hol low cylindrical rod, with a longitudinal slot therethrough, a transparent sheet mounted in said frame and having one edge disposed in said slot, and members atthe ends of said rod for rotatably supporting the same.

2. The combination of a frame having sides and ends, one side being formed by a hollow cylindrical rod the ends of which project beyond the ends of said frame to form trunnions, a. transparent sheet in said frame having one edge within said rod, and means for receiving said trunnions.

In a device of the class described, in combination, a rack, a box supported in said rack in an inclined position and adapted to display articles for sale, said box having a hinged lid at the rear and elevated edge thereof, means for supporting said lid, and a transparent cover rotatably supported above said rack on an axis disposed over the rear edge of said box and adjacent to said cover.

4. In a device of the class described, in combination, a rack, a box supported on said rack in an inclined position and having a lid with a hinged connection to said box at the elevated rear edge thereof, a movable support attached to said rack and supporting said lid directly therefrom, a bar rotatably supported on said rack adjacent to the edge of said box, and a transparent cover attach ed to said bar and forming a closure for said box, said bar constituting a hinged connection for raising said cover.

5. The combination of a rectangular rack having ends formed with upper inclined edges, an arm supported by said rack and having an upturned portion, and a closure pivotally supported above said rack.

The combination with a box having a hinged lid, of a rack supporting said box and having the upperedges of its ends in olined, an arm supported by said rack and having an upturned portion, a transparent closure pivotally supported above said rack, and means for supporting the lid of said box when in open position.
