DISPLAY-LID'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Application led December 16, 1913. Serial No. 807,033.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHiLIP A. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display-Lids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specication.
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with boxes, or the like.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a display lid, or device designed to be movably applied upon the open top of the body of a box, or other container having a lid hinged thereto, or which may not have a lid, whereby cigars and other tobacco productsV as well as .merchandise may be exhibited for sale to avoid being damaged by dust, or subjected to the drying action of the air which tend to impair the products by extracting the natural moisture therefrom. This is accomplished mainly by providing a plate of glass, or other transparent material which is applied upon the open top of the body of the box in a manner to adapt it to be hingedly swung to open `or `closed positions thereupon.
A' further object of the invention is to provide a `holder adapted to be detachably applied upon the lid of the box, and which is formed with two spaced ears, or lugs havingv apertures for removably receiving the pins of the transparent plate to permit the plate to be attached to the box lid 1nstead of the pins being inserted in the box, whereby the plate may be swung to open, or closed positions on the body of the box by moving the box lid accordingly.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out 1n the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box with one form of display lid embodying my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan, partly broken away, of the form yof display lid shown in Fig. 1. 'Fig 3 is a fragmentary perspective view, partly broken away, showing the display lid as applied toa box, and the form of holder employed in conjunction therewith for permitting the display lid to be detachr will be receivedin the holes 2,8 thereof.-l In ably fastened to the lid of the box.
The device, or display lid has a substantially rectangular plate of glass,` or other transparent material, as 10, which is cut in a size suitable to fit snugly, but be freely movable between the upper extending edges of the side walls 11 and 12 of the body 13 of a box adapted to contain cigars, orother tobacco products, or any kind of merchandise, whereby the goods may be prevented from being damaged by the collection of dust, or the action of air, or said transparent plate may be cut in a size so as to rest upon the upper edges of all of the walls of the box, instead of between the side walls thereof, and the box may be provided with a lid 111 hinged to the back wall of the box. j
The transparent plate 10 may be inclosed in the usual, or any preferred form of frame, as l5, in order to prevent the plate from being easily broken as well as serving as a means to secure to the plate two stationary pointed pins, as 16 and 17, or these pins may be held against displacement to the plate in any other desired manner. The pins 16 and 17 are provided upon the frame 15 so las to extend in'opposite lateral directions from the ends of one of the edges of the frame,
and both of the pins have pointed free ends,
and extending from the front edge of the frame 15 is a lug 20 adapted to be gripped between the lingers of a person for manually ioving the lid tok and from the body ofthe Serving to allow a detachable sign to be used. in conjunction with the display llid and also to permit the display lid to be removably held to the lid of the boxinstead of to the body thereof, I provide a form of holder, as 23. The holder 23 has a strip 24 of metal, or other pliable material adapted to be disposed transversely of the lower part of the lid, and on this strip may be inscribed a suitable sign, as 24a. Extendingat an angle from the lower longitudinal edge of the strip 24: is a metal flange 25 having free end'portions which are bent upwardly to provide ears, or lugs 26 and 27, each` of which has a hole 28 therethrough. To pivotally connect the display lid to the holder 23 the ears 26 and 27 are bent in opposite lateral directions with respect to the flange 25, and v this manner the display lid will be pivoted to the holder, and the flange 25 will serve to support the frame of the transparent plate. In order to permit the holder 23 to be detachably applied to the lid of a box, on one end of the strip 24 is an integral sleeve 29 which is formed by bending this end portion of the sleeve in substantially an L- shape so that the free end part thereof is spaced from the strip whereby the sleeve may admit an edge of' the box lid. On the other end of the strip 24 is an integral clip 30 which is formed by bending this end part of' the strip at a right angle, and then curving the free edge of' the bent part to provide a vertically disposed bead 31 which is spaced from the strip. When the holder 23 with the display lid attached thereto is applied to the lid of the box the strip 24 is positioned so that one of the side edges of the box lid will be seated in the. sleeve 29, and the strip is then disposed crosswise of the lid. By the exertion of' slight pressure the opposite side edge of the lid is forced between the bead 3l and the strip 24 for holding the lid in the yclip 30. The holder 23 will thereby be detaehably held upon the box lid so that when the lid is swung in directions to and from the body of the box the transparent plate and' its frame will be accordingly opened or closed upon the open top of the body of the box.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modilications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve yto myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I-Iaving ythus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent D :to which the l'pins are removably pivoted, said holder being adapted to be detachably held `upon the lid of the box, and the said 'holder supporting the plate in a manner whereby the transparent plate will be swung to vopen and closed vpositions on the body of the box when the lid is moved accordingly.
2. In a display lid of the character described, a transparent plate inclosed in a substantially rectangular frame, and adapted tol be disposed on the open top of the body of a box having a'lid hinged'thereto, two vpins extending in opposite lateral directions from the ends of one edge of the frame, and a holder to which the pins are removably pivoted, said holder being adapted to be detachably applied upon the lid of the box. and the said holder supporting the plate in a manner whereby the transparent plate will be swung to open and closed positions upon the body of the box when the lid is moved accordingly.
