Application filed December 19, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State ofNeW York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display-Lids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with boxes.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a display lid designed to be applied to a box in a manner so that it may be hingedly swung to open or closed positions upon the open top of the body of the box whereby merchandise contained therein may be displayed for sale without being subjected to the contaminating influence 0f the air, or the collection of dust, and wherein is provided a plate of glass, or other transparent material framed in wire of corresponding thickness, thereby obviating the use of the customary forms of metal frames employed for this purpose and which invariably cover so much of the marginal edge portions of the plate that the goods in the box are prevented from being properly exhibited.
Other objects of the invention are to pro vide a number of clamps adapted to serve as means for securing the frame against displacement to the plate; to provide means whereby the transparent plate and its frame may be detachably pivoted to the body of the box; to provide a holder for permitting the lid to be removably held to the lid of the box, as occasion requires, so that the display lid may be swung to open, or closed positions upon the body of the box by moving the lid of the box accordingly; and to provide upon the holder means serving to permit a number of interchangeable signs to be displayed thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a display lid of simple and efficient construction, and whichis susceptible of being made in various sizes so as to be used in conjunction with boxes of different sizes.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described herein- Specification of Letters Patent.

after and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of display lid embodying my invention, showing its use when applied for securing the frame to the transparent plate, and Fig. 7' is an enlarged View of the formation of the clamp when applied to the transparent plate and its frame.
The display lid has .a plate 10 of glass, or
other transparent material which may be substantially rectangular, or of other suitable shape so as to be movably applied upon the open top of the body 11 of a box 12 having a lid 13 hinged to its rear Wall. The transparent plate 10 is mounted in a frame 14- having a front bar 15, a rear bar 16, and two side bars 17 and 18. 'All of the bars 15, 16, 17, 18 are made preferably of metal wire of a gage corresponding to the thickness of the plate, though any other suitable material to provide similar bars may be used, and these bars are formed so as to be positioned against the edges of the transparent plate, as shown in Fig. 3, without overlapping the marginal edge portions of the plate, as is incident to frames of this type ordinarily in use.
Serving as means to hold the frame 14 against accidental displacement to the transparent plate 10, I provide a plurality of clamps, as 20. The clamps 20 are alike in formation, and each of said clamps has two spaced heads or disks, as 21 and 22. The heads 21 and 22 of each of the clamps are preferably substantially circular in shape, and each pair of the heads are connected by a narrow integral neck, or shank 23. When the frames are made in limited sizes one of the clamps is employed upon each corner thereof, but when the frame is made of large sizes additional clamps may be used intermediate its corners. In applying the clamps 20 to hold the transparent plate and its frame together, the shank of each clamp is bent so that the heads 21 and 22 thereof are in spaced opposed relation, and the or other suitable material, as 19*.
therein will be practically unobstructed for being displayed to the best advantages, thereby obviating the use of the customary forms of metal frames employed for this purpose, and which invariably cover so much of the marginal edge portions of the plate that the goods in the boxes are prevented from being properly exhibited.
As illustrated in Figs. 4c and 5, forms of the frame 1% may be made wherein the rear bar 16 is dispensed with, and instead the side bars 17 and 18 are provided so as to be of sufficient lengths whereby their free ends will extend some distance beyond the rear edge of the transparent plate, and the extensions of these bars are angularly bent, as at 19 and 19*, so that the free end portions thereof are disposed toward each other and are spaced from the rear edge of the transparent plate. Also adapted-to be used in conjunction with the transparent plate and this form of the frame 14 is a strip of metal, The strip 19 is disposed at an angle relatively to the transparent plate and its frame, and is adaptedto be positioned transversely of the lower part of the lid of the box when the display lid is in use. On the lower longitudinal edge of the strip 19 is provided an angularly projecting flange 19 which is applied under the rear edge portion of the transparent plate, and the flange is soldered or otherwise secured to the underside of the side bars 17 and 18 of the frame. Then this form of display lid is applied to a box it is positioned so that the side edges of the lid of the box will be guided between the angular extensions 19 and 19 and the strip 19". By then directing the display lid so that the transparent plate and its frame will rest upon the top of the body of the box, the strip 19 will be disposed across the lower part of the box lid which on being moved accordingly will swing the transparent plate and frame to open or close positions on the open top of the body of the box.
Also for the purpose of. permitting the lid to be removably held to the lid of the box as occaslon requires so that the display lid may be swung to open, or closed positions upon the body of the box by accordingly moving the lid of the box, a holder, as 26, is provided. The'holder- 26 has a supporting strip 27 When the holder is used in conjunction with 7 the forms of the frame, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, upon the lower longitudinal edge of the strip may be provided a substantially L-shaped flange 28 which extends at a right angle relatively to the strip so that the upwardly projecting arm of the flange will be spaced from the strip to provide the holder with a lower longitudinal groove 29. To
fasten the holder 26 to the transparent plate and its frame, the holder is arranged so that the L-shaped flange 28 will be disposed upon the upper surface of the rear edge portion of the plate and frame, and upon the ends of the second arm of the flange is provided two laterally extending fingers, as 30 and 31, which are bent over the frame and under the transparent plate. By then so]- dering the fingers to the frame the'holder will be held securely to the transparent plate. Extending from the upper longitudinal edge of the strip 27 is a second flange 32 which is approximately the shape of an inverted L, and this flange is also disposed at a right angle relatively to the strip so that its downwardly projecting arm will be opposed to the upwardly projecting arm of the flange 28 as well as being spaced from the strip to provide the holder with an upper longitudinal groove 33. The flanges 28 and 32 serve as means to permit a. number of plates 34 having various signs, as 35, inscribed thereon to be removably mounted in the grooves 29 and 38 of the flanges, whereby the signs may be interchangeable for advertising different brands of goods.
On the ends of the strip 27 are provided two vertically disposed sleeves 36 and 37 which are preferably formed by making the strip of sufiicient length to provide laterally disposed extensions which are bent in approximately L-shapes so that the end portions thereof are spaced from the strip. To apply the holder 26 and the transparent plate and its frame to a box having a lid hinged thereto, these parts are directed so that the side edges of the lid of the box will be received in the sleeves 36 and 37 of said holder. The holder is then guided to the lower part of the box lid for the transparent plate and its frame to rest upon the open top of the body of the box. The transparent plate and frame may thereby be swung to open, or closed positions on the box by directing the lid of the box back and forth relatively to the body of the box.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without llO departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A display lid supplemental to a box having a lid hinged thereto, adapted to be applied on the open top of the body of the box, comprising a wire frame in which is mounted a transparent plate, said wire frame engaging and in contact with the edges of the plate, and having a cross-sectional diameter such that the opposite planes of the faces of the plate are coincident with planes tangential with the periphery of the frame, and means on the frame, adapted to detachably engage the lid of the box so that the display lid may be swung to open and closed positions on the body of the box when the lid of the box is moved accordingly.
