Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. '7, 1916.
Application filed August 1, 1913. Serial No. 782,499.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, PHILIP A. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Detachable Box-Lids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of lids or devices adapted .to be used in conjunction with boxes containing merchandise.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a box lid designed to be employed for displaying for sale merchandise, and especially cigars, or other products, whereby the goods may be prevented from being damaged by exposure to the air, or contaminated by collecting dust, or other foreign substances, and which is of a form to adapt the lid to be applied for instance to cigar boxes in a manner, whereby the original arrangement of the cigars in the box will not be disturbed; thus overcoming the objections to certain forms of lids of this class which requires so much care while being fitted upon a box that all, or part of the cigars are often accidentally emptied therefrom. This is accomplished mainly by providing upon one end of the lid a rigid sleeve, or clamp adapted to receive one of the side edges of the lid of the box, and upon the other end of the lid is provided a yielding sleeve, or clamp for permitting the box lid to be readily forced between both clamps by a direct movement, instead of requiring the sleeves to be slidably guided over the edges of the lid of the box as is incident to some forms of detachable box lids.
Another object of the invention is to provide a frame substantially inverted L- shaped in cross section, in the inner surface of the depending flange thereof is formed a groove for holding a transparent plate in the frame, and which enables the frame to be manufactured at a very moderate cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a detachable box lid which is susceptible of being made in various sizes so as to be adapted for use in conjunction with boxes of various types.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described here-- inafter, and then pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of one form of detachable'lid embodying my invention as applied to a box. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, partly broken away, showing another form of the yielding clamp used in conjunction with the lid. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a slightly different form of the lid shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a fragmentary top plan, partly broken away, of the lid shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan of one corner of the lid shown in Fig. 2.
'The detachable box lidhas a frame 10 which -may be of any desired form, but is preferably substantially rectangular in shape, whereby side bars 11 and 12, and a front transverse bar18 are providedso that the frame may be movably applied upon the open top of the body of a box, as 11, having a lid 15 hinged thereto. The side bars 11 and 12,-and the transverse bar 13 are of the shape of an inverted L as viewed in crosssection so as to form a top flange 16 and a depending flange 17.
In order to provide a simple and efficient means for permitting a plate of glass, as 18 or other transparent material to be held in the frame 10 so that cigars, or other products when displayed for. sale may be prevented from being damaged by exposure to the air, or contaminated by collectingdust, or other foreign'substances, in the inner sur-' face of the depending flange 17 of the side bars 11 and 12 and in the transverse bar 13 is a continuous groove 19. The transparent plate 18 is applied to the frame 10 by being inserted in the groove between the open ends of the side bars 11 and 12 which n are opposite to the transverse bar 13. The
plate is then guided along the groove 19. until one of its edgesis seated in the groove 'of the transverse bar.
The transparent plate 18 is held in the frame against displacement by a bar 20 which is substantially U-shaped in cross-section to provide a groove 21 longitudinally thereof and in which the edge of the plate opposite to the transverse bar 13 is seated, and the said bar 20 may be soldered, or otherwise secured to the adjacent ends of the side bars 11 and 12.
This form of lid is employed in conjunc- 1 tion with a boxin a manner to permit the frame and its transparent plate 18 to be swung alternately to open, or closed positions upon the body of the box when the lid of the box is directed forwardly, or backwardly with relation to the box, and serving to enable the device to be detachably held to the box lid to either the U-shaped bar 20,
or to the ends of the side bars 11 and 12 opposite to the transverse bar 13 is provided an elongated plate or strip, as 21, upon which may be displayed the name of the products contained in the box. The plate 21 is approximately the same length, or slightly longer than the width of the box lid 15, and said plate is preferably made of spring metal. Upon one end of the plate 21 is a sleeve, or clamp 22 which may be provided by bending the end of the plate in the form of a U and which is adapted to fit around or receive one vertical edge of the box lid 15. The opposite end of the plate 21 is curved in substantially an S-shape to provide a sleeve, or clamp 23 adapted to spring over the opposite vertical edge of the box lid 15, or instead of the S-shaped sleeve 23, I may use a clamp of a form, as illustrated at 24 Figs. 2 and 5, which is made of spring wire secured in any suitable way to the plate, and has its top end bent to provide a head, as 25. In some forms of the box lids the elongated plate 21 may be dispensed with, and in lieu thereof, the clamps 22 and 23 may alone be employed, as shown in Fig. 3. In applying this form of detachable lid to a box, the lower part of one of the side edges of the lid 15 is guided in the clamp 22. The frame 10 of the device is then positioned upon the top of the body 7 of the box, and by the exertion of slight force the lower part of the opposite side edge of the lid of the box will be sprung in the clamp 23 for retaining the device to the box, thereby obviating the necessity for slidably guiding the clamps over the side edges of the lid 15 from the top to the lower part thereof as is incident to the use of certain forms of display lids, and which frequently cause all, or part of the contents of the box to be accidentally emptied therefrom.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention,
'but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of th1s mventlon, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent p 1. A detachable box lid of the character described, comprising a substantially U- shaped frame with an open portion, said frame being substantially the shape of an inverted L in cross-section to provide a top and depending portions, the frame at the angular portion thereof having an outpressed bead forming an interior groove outwardly of the planes of. said depending portions for the reception of a transparent plate from the open side of the frame, a U-shaped bar at the open side ofthe frame receiving one edge of the plate and means carried by the frame for resiliently connecting the frame to the hinged lid of a box, to permit the detachable lid to swing to open and closed positions,
2. A detachable box lid of the character described, comprising a substantially U- shaped frame with an open portion, said frame being substantially the shape of an inverted L in cross-section to provide a top and depending portions, the frame at the angular portion thereof having an outpressed bead forming an interior groove outwardly of the planes of said depending portions for the reception of a transparent plate from the open side of the frame, a U-shaped bar at the open side of the frame receiving one edge of the plate, a substantially U-shaped stationary member at one end of the rear edge of the frame, and a spring actuated member also on the rear edge of the frame at its other end, whereby one side edge of the box lid may be seated in the U-shaped member and the spring actuated member may then be sprung over the opposite side edge of the box lid, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
This specification signed and witnessed this thirty-first day of July, A. D., 1913.
PHILIP A. BECKER.
