DOUGLAS JENNINGS, 0F BENNETTSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
CIGAR-BOX SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1911.
Application filed May 6, 1911. Serial No. 625,608.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOUGLAS JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bennettsville Marlboro county, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Box Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for supporting boxes in show cases and in other places in such way as to properly display the goods contained therein.
It has particular reference to cigar boxes provided with hinged covers but it 1s of courscapplicable to analogous devices.
It has been my purpose to make a device which is simple in construction, can be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the box which will support the box at the proper angle and hold the hinged cover in proper position and which at the same time can be made at very little expense.
The novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of acigar box in dotted lines having my support applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a cross section of a cigar box with my support in position.
In the drawings 1 represents the ordinary cigar box which is provided with the hinged cover 2. In displaying cigars in the original boxes as is ordinarily done, it is desirable to place the box at a slight angle facing the front of the show case so that the purchasers can inspect the cigars easily and it is also desirable that the hinged cover be supported so that the customer can see it and the trade-mark or label which is ordinarily placed on it. My device is intended to support both the box and the hinged cover in proper position such as that illustrated in Fig. 2. The support embodies a horizontal portion 3 which may be bent at the end 4, as shown to fit against the box in inclined position and a pointed prong or projection 5 is struck from the flat sheet metal strip out of which the support is made and this prong is adapted to be forced into the bottom of the cigar box so as to secure the support in position. At the opposite end of the horizontal portion there is an upwardly extending portion 6 for the purpose of supporting the rear edge of the box and there is a rearwardly bent ledge or shoulder 7 at the proper height to support the box in position. At the rear edge of this ledge there is an upwardly extending portion 8 which may be bent as shown and which extends to a suflicient height to support the hinged cover 2 at the proper angle. A sharp point 9 is provided on the support at the shoulder and it may be formed by striking a prong from the metal at that point, as shown.
The operation of the device and the method of applying it to cigar boxes will be apparent from the above description and it is suflicient to say that the support is simply placed on the box and the prongs 5 and 9 pushed into the material so as to retain the support in position and the entire device is then ready for use. It will be understood that the horizontal portion 3 and the prong 5 serve to give added strength to the support and to hold it more firmly against turning or displacement but it will be understood that the vertical portions of the support would be useful Without this added feature. It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the precise details of construction.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is,
1. A support for display boxes having hinged covers comprising an upright portion having a ledge or shoulder on which the rear edge of the box is adapted to rest and an upwardly extending portion in the rear of said ledge against which the cover may rest when in open position and means for detachably securing said support in position on the box.
2. A support for display boxes having hinged covers comprising an upright portion having a ledge or shoulder on which the rear edge of the box is adapted to rest and an upwardly extending portion in the rear of said ledge against which the cover may rest when in open position and a prong on said shoulder adapted to enter the bottom of said box to hold said support in position.
3. A support for display boxes having hinged covers consisting of a fiat metal strip having between its ends a bend forming a supporting ledge or shoulder and a prong or point extending upwardly from said shoulder and adapted to enter the bottom of said box vided with an upwardly extending prong or point adapted to enter the bottom of said 15 box and said support being provided with an upwardly extending portion from said shoulder at the rear adapted to bear against and support the box cover when open.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 20 in presence of two Witnesses.
DOUGLAS JENNINGS.
Witnesses H. B. CROSLAND, J. R. TURNER.
