DOOR-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1910.
Application filed February 2, 1909. Serial No. 475,609.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM D. TAUBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Redwood, in the county of Redwood and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Gatches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to builders hardware, and has special reference to a device which is adapted to catch and hold doors in an open position.
An object of this invention is the provision of a device ofthis character which is adapted to be secured to a wall adjacent a door for the purpose of catching the door and retaining the same in an open position.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character which is of simple construction, which is strong and durable and one which can be economically manufactured.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a device of this character which 1s so constructed as to prevent the sudden jar of the door when the same is thrown violently in an open position.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device disclosed as being in position and having a door engaged therewith, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, the device comprises a metallic strip which is so bent as to form a base portion which is provided with a plurality of apertures 11 through which are adapted to be passed screws 12 or the like for the purpose of securing the base portion 10 to a wall 13. The base portion 10 is provided with an outwardly extended flange 14: at one end which supports an abutment 15 extended outwardly therefrom in parallel with the base portion 10. The abutment 15 is pro vided upon its outer face with a bumper 16 which is composed of rubber or like resilient material and against which the door 17 is adapted to engage. The outer extremity of the abutment 15 is recessed as at 18 and is provided with inturned circularly-formed edges 19 to form bearings for a pintle 20 which pivotally supports a lever 21 which is passed through the recess 18. The lever 21 is fulcrumed at its central portion and is provided with a shoulder 22 upon its outer extremity and a beveled face 23 positioned adjacent said shoulder 22. The inner extremity of the lever 21 is pivotally secured to a rod 2% which extends inwardly and slidably engages through an aperture formed in the flange 14 and is held in such position by means of an adjusting nut 25. The rod 2-1 is provided with a coil spring 26 which is disposed thereabout between the inner extremity of the lever 21 and the outer face of the flange 14; for the purpose of normally holding the outer extremity of the lever 21 in an inward position.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the door 17 is thrown into an open position the outer edge thereof is engaged against the beveled face 23 and thereby causes the outward swinging motion of the lever 21 against the tension of the spring 26 which is impinged against the outer face of the flange 14 thereby causing the sliding of the rod 2 1 through the flange 14:. When the door 17 is engaged against the bumper 16 the outer edge thereof is carried past the shoulder 22 and the spring 26 is then permitted to actuate the lever 21 and to throw the outer extremity thereof inwardly against the edge of the door and to thereby bring the shoulder 22 against the outer face of the door to prevent the return of the same. To release the door 17 the lever 21 is thrown outwardly and the door is drawn from en-. gagement with the bumper 16. WVhen the door is released and the lever 21 is permitted to return to its normal position it is held in operative position by means of the adjusting nut which engages the inner face of the flange 14c and prevents the sliding of the rod 24 from the aperture formed through the flange 14. It is readily seen that by the employment of the adjusting nut 25the lever 21 may be positioned normally at various angles according to the requirements and the position of the device against the wall.
