Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1915.
Application filed November 30, 1914. Serial No. 874,858.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, DANIEL WALTER, consulting engineer, a subject ofthe King of Great Britain, of
Sussex, England, have useful Locking Device and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as invented a new and.
my will enable others skilled in, the art to which it appertains to. make-and use the same. This invention relates to locking devices for casement stays'and has'for its object the provision of a device which shall eliminate the use of a key for releasing purposes as has hitherto been usual with devices of this character.
A further object is the provision of a for casement stays which, will be simple, comparatively inexpensive in manufacture, efficient and durable in use and a general improvement of the art.
With these and other objects and advan- 2.5 tages in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, formation,
arrangement parts to be hereinafter and claimed and illusthe accompanying drawings, in
- and combination. of
more fully described I trated in Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a casement and frame with the locking-device in position. Fig.2 is a vertical section taken on line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical Fig. 4 is a detail of a further modification; Fig. 5- is a vertical section of a further modification.
1 Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the draw' ings the casement l is hinged in the usual and is provided with an arm 3 pivoted at 4- to a bracket 5 so as to be capable of movement in one plane irrespective of the casement.
To retain the easement inthe desired po- 45, sition means have to be provided for instan- A taneously locking the same and which means have also to be so devised thatdthe release from a locked position is attained with equal facility. One form of such a means made in accordance with this invention is shown in Fig. 2 and consists oftwo concentrically arranged telescopically collapsiblc tubes or cylinders 8 and 11 both of which are closed at their inner ends. The
5 outer tube 8 is supported by shoulders 9 on and within a base member 6 which is Grosvenor House, New
'ing the outer tube 8.
tu e
recessed to receive it and which is firmly secured to the casement frame by screws 10 or other means.
A central screw 11 is provided, passing through the inner closed end of the tube 8 into the casement, to retain the device in position with an allowance at the same time for rotation.
completely through the two concentric tubes and directly over the pin 12 by reason of the corresponding recesses 13 provided.
The inner tube or cylinder 11 with' its pin 12 is held in a normally raised position by means of a suitable spring 15 the lower part of which rests upon the closed end of the outer tube 8. When in this raised position the locking pin 12 is forced into engagement with the recesses in the casement arm aforesaid and to release the same therefrom 1 the-inner tube 11 is depressed, means, such as a cap 21 being provided to facilitate the operation.
The device represented in Fig. 2 isintended for use with triangular cross section casement arms.
The modified form according to Fig. 3 is precisely similar in operation to the one just described in connection with the'pr'evious figure with this difference that, the base member 6 is of a box like construction with the object of providing a deeper bearing for the inner end of the outer tube 8. A further difference is in the shape of the corresponding recesses 13 which in this instance are semi-circular to accommodate'casement arms of circular section.
The modified form according to'Fig. 4 relates to the means for rotatively support- In this instance the 8 is formed with a downwardly projectin annular flange 18 by which it is supporte' upon an annular u standing flange 19 formed on the base member 6.
In Fig. 6 is shown a further modified form intended primz rily for use with fixed casement arms. According to this form the locking device is secured by means of the outer tube 8 to the easement 1 while the 'in-. her tube 11 carrying the locking pin 12 is are suitably slotted to allow for clearing the arm 3 during depression. 7
It will be seen that the device is applicable equally for curved as for straight casement arms.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A locking device for casement stays comprising a hollow member, a second member slidable in the first member and directly engageable to actuate same to release position, said members being provided respectively with opposite openings through which a casement stay is adapted to slide, a locking stud carried by the second member, and
vmeans for yieldingly holding the second member in position to dispose the locking stud in engaging position with respect to a casement stay.
2. A locking device for casement stays comprising a hollow member, a second member slidable in the first member and directly DANIEL lVALTER.
