Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 8, 1909. Serial No. 471,283.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jimrns SHARON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canaseraga, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Caster, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to adjustable casters, and it has for its object to provide a stove leg to which is pivoted an arm having a wedge-shaped flange which is adapted for engaging snugly converging sides of the stove leg, there being a caster pivoted to the flange and means being provided for holding the arm off the floor.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete description.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention, but it will be understood that I do not limit myself there to, as I consider myself entitled to all forms and embodiments of the invention which may be held to fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciflcation, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my stove leg as applied to a stove Fig. 2 is a sec tional side elevation of the stove leg Fig. 3 is a similar sectional elevation, but with the arm raised, Fig. isa sectional View on the line 4L- 1 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the outer side of the stove leg is of the usual form. The inner surfaces of the sides 11 of the base of the stove leg diverge from a central portion 12, and at some distance above the base of the leg 10 are two lugs 13, which are preferably integral with. the leg 10, and are spaced apart one from the other, there being orifices in these lugs 13 in alinement with each other, and in these orifices is disposed a pin 14 which also passes through an orifice in an arm 15, by which means the arm 15 is pivoted to the lugs 13 and relatively to the leg 10. On the inner surfaces of one of these lugs 13, thereis an obliquely disposed off-set portion 16, the upper portion of which extends inwardly beyond the lower portion, so that a cut-away portion 17 of the arm 15, above the pin 14,
may be inserted in this off-set portion, the portion 17 of the arm 15 resting against the shoulder formed by this off-set portion, to hold the arm 15 raised above the floor. The portion 17 of the arm 15 is inclined transversely, so that the edge next to the off-set portion 16 is somewhat pointed, and the oilset portion 16 of the lug 13 also extends downwardly and inwardly, so that when the portion 17 of the arm 15 is fitted against the or -set portion 16 of the lug 13, the arm 15 will be held secure and will not be apt to fall by any jar of the stove. At the lower end of the arm 15 there is a lug 18, which is wedgeshaped and is adapted to fit snugly in the space between the diverging inner sides 11 of the stove leg. In this flange 18 of the arm 15 is ournaled the pintle 19 of a caster 20. When the arm 15 is downwardly disposed, with the flange 18 snugly engaging .the inner sides 11 of the stove leg, as best shown in Fig. 2, the center of the caster wheel is at all times disposed beyond the vertical plane of the pivoted portion of the arm 15, so that the weight of the stove will assist in holding the arm downwardly and outwardly with the flange 18 disposed between the sides 11 of the stove leg. Vt' hen the casters are not needed, the arm 15 may be readily raised by slightly lifting the leg and throwing up the arm 15, when by pushing it to one side the portion 17 of the arm 15 will engage the shoulder 16, thereby securing the arm 15 in a raised posi tion with the caster at some distance from the floor.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In an adjustable caster having converging inner sides, a pivoted arm, there being a wedge-shaped flange on the arm, and a caster secured to the flange, the wedge-shaped flange being ada ted for engaging the converging sides of tie stove le 2. In an adjustable caster having converging inner sides, a pivoted arm, there being a wedge-shaped flange on the arm, a caster secured to the flange, the wedge-shaped flange being adapted for engaging the converging sides of the stove leg, and means for holding the arm n with the caster at some distance from the cor.
3. In an adjustable caster, an arm loosely pivoted relatively to the leg, and a caster journaled in the arm, the arm being adapted for engaging the leg beyond the vertical plane of its pivot, there being a shoulder at I the side of the pivoted portion of the arm in which the arm is adapted to be disposed to be held away from the floor.
