Description

APPLICATION FILED MAY 31, 1907.
W/ TNE SSE S N VE N 7'05 Chas F 777osman PATENTED NOV. 12, 1907.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. MOSMAN, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BURNS, SILVER &
00., OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
FURNITURE-CASTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MosMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture'Casters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to furniture casters, and consists in certain arrangements of parts and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this description.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement-Fig. 2 a sectional elevation-Fig. 3 a rear elevation, and Fig. 4 a section, on an enlarged scale, at the line as, x, of Fig. 1.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
The frame 1 of the caster is made from a suitable sheet metal blank bent into the proper shape and having its extremities 2 in parallelism so as to form a fork between which latter the caster wheel is journaled inthe manner presently to be explained. I i 3 is a clip which is formed from sheet metal bent into a rectangular shape so as to afford upper and lower horizontally disposed portions 4, 5, the outer ends of these portions be'ng provided with spurs 6, 7, so that when this clip is properly assembled within the closed portion of the frame, these spurs are bent over against the rear portion of the frame, as seen at Fig. 3, thereby securing said frame and clip together.
I employ an ordinary pintle 8 provided at the lower end with a head 9, which pintle is inserted up through perforations 10, 11, in the portions 4, 5, a washer 12 being then forced down upon the pintle in proximity to the portion 4, so that'it will be readily understood that the pintle is secured in position while at the same time the frame of the caster may revolve freely therearound.
13 is the caster wheel which has no hub but is made with a central web 14 which latter is apertured as seen at 15, so as to form an enlarged circular traversing surface 16 that is concentric with the periphery of said wheel. The forks 2 are perforated and are connected by means of a suitable pin 17 whose ends are headed, as shown at 18, and loosely journaled upon this pin and between these forks is a small roller 19, which is disposed in the same vertical plane with the web 14 and bears directly upon the bottom of the traversing surface 16. The diameter of this roller 19 is materially less than that of the aperture 15, and when the caster is in position for use, the weight placed upon the same will cause this roller to always bear downwardly against the traversing surface 16 so that when the wheel 13 is revolved, this roller will track against different portions of the surface 16, thus distributing the wear throughout a comparatively long circuit.
It will thus be readily understood that by my improvement I obtain the benefits of a roller bearing and also that the wear on the bearing is reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
furniture caster, comprising a forked frame, a pintle suitably secured to said frame, a wheel having a central web apertured to form an enlarged circular traversing surface concentric with the periphery of said wheel, and a roller having a diameter materially less than that of said upcrtured portion and journaled loosely between the forked ends of said frame in position to bear against said surface.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES 1r. MosMAN.
Witnesses ALICE M. Cownns, MABEL A. \VEED.
