BUTTON 0R BADGE.l
Specification of Letters Patent. Y Patented NOV, 8, 1921,
Application flied aprny 2, i921. semi No. 457,988.
To all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MITCHEL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in` Buttons or Badges, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to buttons or badges and more particularly to the type employing a front member and a back member, the latter of which has a fastening means mounted thereon, an object of this invention being to provide a Anovel means of connecting the back member with the front member in such a manner that they may be readily connected or disconnected.
To this and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the button or badge;
Fig. 2 is a rear view;
Fig. 3 is a rear view showing the manner in which the back member is applied to the front member;
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the front member;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5, Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6, Fig. 2;
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7, Fig. 3;
Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8 8, Fig. 2;
Fig. 9 is an enlarged fragmentary section on the line 5 5, Fig. 2; and
Fig. 10 is a rear view of the rear member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the front member which, in this instance, is of annular form and has an annular rearwardly extending flange 2 pro- -vided at equidistant points with inwardly turned lugs 3, these lugs, in this instance, being of uniform width.
A back member 4 is provided which is preferably of circular formation of a size to fit snugly within the annular ange 2 of the front member. This rear member is provided with equidistantly arranged notches 5 corresponding in number to the lugs 3 and adapted to receive said lugs when the back `member is fitted to the front member. A disk 6 is'adapted vto be Iheld between the front and the back .member land to be .eX- pased. threeah :the .Opening in .the front Y any suitable fastening means.
y ing pin 11.
member. This disk may contain any suitable matter as, for instance,printed matter.
' For the purpose of locking the back member against rotation on the front member, the back member is cut or slotted at 7 to provide two tongues 8 extended in opposite directions, one toward the other, the outer sides of these tongues being coincident with the perimeter of the back member and the free ends of the tongues being spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the width of the'lugs 3. The tongues are deflected slightly with reference to the plane of the back member, and as the back member is made of yielding or spring material the tongues tend to maintain this deflected position. When the back member is rotated in either direction, one of the lugs 3 will Aride upon one of the tongues 8 and depress the latter to the plane of the back member until such lug passes off the end of said tongue, when the latter will spring to its normal position, thus confining the lug 3 between the ends of the two tongues 8 and preventing the rotation of the back member. To remove the back member, one of the tongues is depressed to the plane of the back member and the latter is turned so that the lug 3 will engage with said tongue until the latter is cleared. thus permitting the notches 5 to be brought undei the lugs 3 and the back plate removed.
The back plate or member may carry any In this ininstance, two lugs 9 are struck upwardly from, the back pl ate, and a pivot pin 10 connects them and has turning thereon a fasten The free end of this fastening pin may be anchored in a post 12 also struck from the metal of the back plate and provided with a substantially J-shaped notch 13 in which the fastening pin 10 is adapted to operate.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a badge or button which is formed of two members connected together in a simple and inexpensive manner which will permit the ready connection or disconnection of the members.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A badge or button comprising a front member having an annular rearwardly eX- tending flange and inwardly extending lugs, circular rear member having notches cor.
responding to said lugs, said member also having between two of the notches spring tongues extending toward each-other from opposite directions and spaced apart at their ends a distance substantially equal to the width of the lugs so that the inwardly extending lugs may ride upon either of said tongues to enter into a locked position between the ends of the tongues.
2. A badge or button comprising a front member having an annular rearwardly extending flange and inwardly extending lugs on'the fiange, a circular rear member having notches corresponding to said lugs and two spring tongues cut from the material of the rear member extending toward each other from opposite directions, spaced apart at their ends a distance substantially equal to the width of the lugs, each tongue having one side coincident with the perimeter of the circular member so that the inwardly extending lugs may ride upon either` of said tongues to enter into a locked position between the ends of the tongues.
