Description
- PATENTED APR. 4, 1905. D. H. DEVEREUX. COMBINED DOOR STOP'AND HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED DEG. 22, 1904.
UNITED STATES Patented April 4, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED DOOR STOP AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 786,430, dated April 4, 1905. Application filed December 22, 190 1. Serial No. 237,958.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. DEVEREUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brunswick, in the county of Glynn and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Door Stop and Holder; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined door stop and catch or holder.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by which a door may be stopped and held in an open position and from which the door may be readily released when it is desired to close the same.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a door and the combined stop and catch, the door being shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the door open and in engagement with the stop and catch. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the combined stop and catch, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the keeper carried by the door to engage the stop and catch.
In the embodiment of my invention I pro.- Vide a casing 1, having on its lower end an annular flange 2, whereby the same is attached to the floor or other support. In the casing l is formed a vertically-disposed bore or passage 3, the upper end of which opens through the top or outer end of the casing, as shown at 4, said opening being of less diameter than the passage 3. In the passage 3 is arranged a bolt 5, on the outer end of which is formed an enlarged conical-shaped head 6, which is adapted to project through the opening 4 in the outer end of the casing. On the bolt 5 is arranged a coil-spring 7 one end of which bears on the floor or support of the casing and the upper end of which bears against the under side of the head 6, the tension of the outwardly projecting portion of which is formed the conical-shaped recess 12. When the door is swung to an open position, the bracket is adapted to engage the projecting head of the bolt 5, which owing to the curved or beveled lower edge of the bracket will force the bolt downwardly or inwardly when passing over the same until the recess 12 comes over or into line with said bolt, when the spring 7 will force the bolt outwardly, thereby engaging the head with the recess 12, which will hold the door in an open position. WVhen the door is swung to an open position, the edge of the keeper will strike against the rubber plug or bumper 9 in the stop-lug 8, thus limiting the opening movement of the door and forming a noiseless stop for the same.
While I have shown and described one form and arrangement of the combined stop and holder, it is obvious that other forms and arrangement may be employed in applying the same, and I therefore do not limit myself to the particular arrangement herein shown and described.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. A combined door stop and holder comprising a hollow casing, having a reduced opening in its outer end, a bolt slidably mounted in said casing, a conical head formed on said bolt, a coiled spring adapted to project said bolt-head through said opening, a stop-lug formed on said casing, and a keeper carried by the door to engage said stoplug, said keeperhaving formed therein a conical-shaped recess to engage the conical head of said bolt, substantially as described.
2. A combined door stop and holder, comprising a hollow casing having a reduced opening in its outer end, a bolt slidably mounted in said casing, a conical head formed on said bolt, a coiled spring adapted to project said bolt-head through said opening, a stop-lug formed on said casing, an elastic bumper arranged in said stop-lug, and a right-angularlyformed keeper-bracket carried by said door to engage said elastic bumper, said bracket having formed therein a conical-shaped recess and a beveled or rounded lower edge to engage the conical head of said bolt, substantially asdescribed.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
DANIEL H. DEVEREUX. Witnesses:
R. B. TUPEFEN, CHAs. J. ANDERSON.
