E. BENDEB, 8v E. STEVENS.
l DOOR SPRING. No. 400,041. Patented Mar. Z6, 1889.
lNiTED STATES PATENT OrrrcEc EDOUARD BENDER AND EMANUEL STEVENS, OF BRUSSELS, BELGIUM.
DOOR-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,041, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed April 2, 18881 Serial No. 269,410. (No model.) Patented in Belgium June 25, 1887, No. 77,958 in France September 3, 1887, No. 185,643; in England September 5, 1887, No. 12,014; in Germany September 20, 1887, No. 44,489; in Austria-Hungary September 20, 1887, No. 37,052, and in Italy September 22, 1887, No. 22,325.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Beit known that we, EDOUARD BENDER and EMANUEL SrEvENs, citizens of the Kingdom of Belgium, residing at Brussels, in Belgium, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Door-Closers, (for which we have obtained Letters Patent in Europe as follows: England, dated September 5, 1887, No. 12,014; Germany, dated September 20, 1887, N o. 44,189; Austria-Hungary, dated September 20, 1887, No. 37,052; Italy, dated September 22, 1887, No. 22,325; France, dated September 25, 1887, No. 185,043; Belgium, dated June 25, 1887, No. 72958;) and we do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to let-ters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention has for its object the construction of a door-closer which shall always act automatically and which is very simple and very inexpensive.
The invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view showing' the apparatus applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a top View partly in section. Fig. is a diagram face view.
A represents a rod or stein having at one end a screw-threaded shank or tang for screwing it into the wood and at the other end a fork, A, which carries a pulley, D.
B is an elastic cord, made preferably of rubber, and having its ends formed into rings c for engagement with screw-eyes O.
The rod or stem A is screwed into the top rail of a door, F. One of the screw-eyes O is screwed into said top rail of the ,door F below the rod or stem A, and the other screweye is screwed into the top rail of the doorframe F above said rod or stem, and the portion of the cord B. midway between its ends is passed over the pulley D, so that the said three points of attachment of the apparatus to the door and the door-frame are in a vertical line with each other, and the cord B forms two sides of a triangle, the base of which is formed by the line of the door and door-framel and the apex by the portion passing over the pulley D. Then the door is opened, the pressure of the pulley against the elastic cord causes said cord to stretch and lengthen out sufficiently to allow the door to swing' outward to the desired distance. lVhen the door is released, the contraction of the elastic cord causes it to press against the pulley and return the door to its closed position.
The elastic cord B, instead of being made of rubber, may be replaced by a coiled metallic spring or anyv similar device arranged in a suitable manner, so as to accomplish the same result.
What we claim as new, and desireto secure' by Letters Patent, is-
An automatic door-closing apparatus consistin g of a rod or stem having one end formed for attachment to a door and the other end carrying a pulley, and an elastic cord or similar device adapted to be passed over said pulley and have onel end attached to said door and the other end attached to the door-fra1nesub stantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
