FREDERICK A. LINGER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
NURSERY CHAIR AND TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. LINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery Chairs and Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a nursery chair and table or the like combined, designed to prevent a child from tipping over, and the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
- For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating one embodiment of my improved nursery chair and table; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the table and its connecting bars.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a table, under which term as herein used, are to be included desks or similar articles of furniture. The table 1 has connecting bars 2 pivotally attached to it, the said bars being designed for arrangement in convergent relation to each other as illustrated in Fig. l, and being adapted for insertion through a laterally elongated opening 3 formed by the cross bar t and its companion bar, said parts forming portions of the back of the chair 5. The bars 2 are preferably formed with any desired number of apertures 6 extending therethrough, and pins 7 or the like are designed for insertion in any of the apertures whereby to detachably connect the bars to the chair back.
10 designates an adjustable foot rest with which the chair may be provided, if desired. In the present instance I have shown this foot rest as provided with studs 11 projecting from its rear edge and designed to be inserted through corresponding openings 12 in the front legs of the chair, cotter pins 11 or similar devlces being inserted through the studs to hold the foot rest rigidly in place after it has been adjusted.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 5, 1909.
Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
Serial No. 81,277.
In the practical use of the devices hereinbefore described, after the child has been placed in the chair, the bars 2 are inserted through the opening 3 and the chair is adjusted in proper relation to the table or desk 1, after which the pins 7 are inserted in the bars, thereby connecting together the table or desk and the chair in such a manner as to effectively prevent the child from tipping either of these articles over.
From the foregoing description in connec tion with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and convenient arrangement of parts whereby a child may be safe guarded against accidents which might arise by the child tipping over the chair in which it. is seated, and that the table or desk is also safe guarded in this respect, as it can not be kicked or pushed over after it has been connected to the chair.
It is to be particularly noted that the arms of the chair are in a lower plane than the table or desk top. This I regard as an important feature of my invention, for by this arrangement of parts, the arms may be extended underneath the table or desk top and the chair pushed inwardly to the desired extent according to the size of the child placed therein, and the chair and table rigidly connected together, this adjustment being an obviously useful one when a relatively small child is placed in the chair, as its arms may better extend over the table top, and the front and edge of the latter brought in the proper proximity to the childs body, while at the same time this adjustment tends to prevent the child from slipping downwardly out of the chair under the top of the table. This adjustment clearly could not be effected if the arms of the chair were on the level with or higher than the table top.
lVhile I have hereinbefore described and shown two forms or embodiments of which my invention is capable, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in proportion, design, and construction of the various parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described the il1V61'ltlO11,Wl1&t is claimed as new is:
1. The combination of a table, connecting bars pivotally connected to said table, a chair formed in its back with an opening through 5 bars pivotally connected thereto, a chair which the bars are designed to be inserted, and means for adjustably connecting the hold the bars to the chair. 10 bars to the back of the chair. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 2. The combination of a table, connecting in presence of two Witnesses.
