G. HUNZNGER. COMBINED TABLE AND CHAIR.
No. 475,505. Patented May 24, 1892.
UNrTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HUNZINGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED TABLE AND CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,505, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed February 25, 1892. Serial Nol 422.752. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HUNZINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in a Combined Table and Chair, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is an improvement upon the device shown in Letters Patent No. 433,623, granted to me August 5, 1890, and it is made with special reference to the introduction into the table of drawers and for providing chairs with rectangular seats instead of the triangular seats represented in the said patent. In the aforesaid patent the back of the chair formed the flange or rim to the table-top, and in the present improvement the rim or flange of the table-top is made up of the fronts of the drawers and the top pieces of the chair-backs, so that when the chairs are introduced beneath the table the rim of the table is uniform in appearance and the drawer at one side of the table is above the chair-seat that has been introduced from the adjacent side ofthe table, thus rendering the table very compact and. adapting the same to use in playing various games, because there is a drawer for each chair, and the chairs can be removed from beneath the table, and the drawers are convenient for use by the parties seated in the various chairs.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the table with the chairs beneath the same, also showing in dotted lines one chair in position for use; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view with the slab or table-top removed and one drawer extended from the table.
The table is composed of the slab a and the legs 1J b', which legs are preferably at right angles to each other, as shown in Fig. 2, and the feet of the legs extend out laterally, as shown in Fig. l. The ornamental shape and character of these legs may be varied. It is usually advantageous to make this table quadrangular and to employ four drawers in the bed of the table. I have represented four drawers d e f g, and these drawers are supported by guide-slides c at their outer edges and by strips or ledges c2 upon the faces of the legs b b and the lower edges of the strips c, respectively. Upon reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed that there is one drawer at each of the sides of the table, and the drawers are represented as toward the right-hand corner of the side of the table and the drawers slide at right angles to one another, so that there is a drawer for each side of the table, and it comes toward the right hand of the person seated at that side of the table; or the drawers may be placed so as to come at the left hand. I have represented each drawer as having a curved ornamental front h, and these fronts may be of any desired contiguration or ornamentation. I make use of four chairs, the seats of which are mar-kede' k lm, and these chairs are provided with legs, and the seat may be of wood, cane, or upholstery of any desired character, and the back legs are extended up, and each chair is provided with a back o, and when the chairs are introduced below the table the chair-seat i passes under the drawer d, the seat 7c under the drawer e, the seat Z under the drawer f, and the seat 'm under the drawer g, and the back legs and the backs o pass in beneath the table-top a, and the backs o are of a size and shape corresponding, substantially, to the fronts of the drawers h, so that when the chairs are in position the rim of the table-top is continuous, being composed of the drawerfronts and the chair-backs, and the ornaments of the respective chair-backs and drawerfronts preferably correspond or harmonize, so that when the chairs are in position the article of furniture appears as one piece and when the chairs are drawn out for use they can be placed in any desired position to the table, and such chairs are of a size and shape convenient for use and comfortable for sitting in, and each person occupying a chair is enabled to usea drawer of the table at his side of such table for holding any cards, checkers, or other articles made use of in carrying on any game or amusement. The chairs do not interfere with the drawers being pulled out, even when the chairs are under the table, because the back of one chair comes against the guideslide at the side of the drawer that is above it.
' I claim as my invention- I 1. The combination, with the tabletop and its legs, of drawers near the respective corners ofthe top and the drawer slides or supports connected withthetable top and legs, and chairs with seats adapted topass in beneath the IOO table and having backs corresponding to the backs corresponding to the respective drawerxo fronts of the drawers and adjacent to the same fronts and passing in beneath the table-top, at the respective sides of the table, substansubstantiallyas set forth.
tially as set forth. Signed by me this 23d day of February, 5 2. The quadrilateral table having cross-legs 1892.
and drawer-slides, in combination with draw- GEO. HUNZINGER.
