UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
GEORGE I-IUNZINGER, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED CHAIR AND TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,623, dated August 5, 1890. Application filed November 18,1889. Serial No. 330,718. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HUNzINeEaa citizen of the United States, residing in the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in a Combined Chair and Table, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a table adapted to fancy articles or to games, and to chairs constructed so as to form part of the table when placed beneath it, the tops of the chair-backs forming the rim or base to the table-top, and the seats of the chairs forming shelves adapted for bric-a-brac or other articles, and such chairs when removed from beneath the table are adapted for use as seats.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the table Wit-h the chairs beneath the same. Fig. 2 is a plan with the table-top removed and its legs in section and some of the chairs removed for use.
The table-top A is of any desired shape, preferably circular or elliptical, and the legs B for supporting the top are more or less ornamental and conform generally to the contour of the back legs D of the chairs, and there are preferably cross-connections E between the legs.
The chairs are of the general shape, corresponding to the spaces between the legs B, and the seats F of such chairs are triangular or more or less rounding, so that they are adapted to the spaces beneath the table, and the seats are connected to the back legs D, and there are one or two front legs G under each chair. The back of each chair hasa top crosspiece II, that is more or less ornamental and adapted to form the base or rim to the tabletop A when the chair is introduced below such table-top, and the back legs D of the chairs, coming adjacent to the sides of the table-legs B, form in appearance parts of the table-legs, and the table and chairs when set together have the appearance of one piece of furniture and can receive useful or ornamental articles, the chairseats forming shelves for such articles.
It will be apparent that where the table is 'der the back to be convenient.
made with four legs, as shown, four chairs may be combined with it or only two at opposite sides. In all instances the top of the chair-back sets closely under the tabletop to form a base or rim in appearance to suchtop.
The chair-seats may be made to set closely together at their edges when placed beneath the table or be more or less rounding, as indicated in Fig. 2.
For small tables the chair-bottom will necessarily be small, and it will be too close in un I therefore make the seat so that it can be drawn forward away from the back legs, and this is conveniently accomplished by a central dovetailed or rabbeted bar I, that is fastened to the under side of the seat andis between two similar rabbeted bars K, fastened to the scat- .fram e so that the parts are connected together,
but the seat and the bar I can be drawn forward, so as to be sufficiently away from the back for the convenience of the occupant.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the horizontal table-top A and its legs B rigidly connected therewith, of the separate and independent chairs, each adapted to be passed in below the tabletop and having legs D that set against the legs B, a back with top piece setting beneath the table-top and forming a rim or base thereto, and a front le and seat adapted to form a shelf, substant1ally as set forth.
2. The chairs, each formed with back legs D, a seat F, and front leg or legs G, and a top piece II to the back, in combination with a table, below the horizontal top of which the chairs are adapted to pass, the top pieces of the chair-backs forming in appearance aflangc or rim to the table-top, substantially as specilied.
Signed by me this 15th day of November, 889.
GEO. HUNZINGER.
