SHOE-SHINER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK IV. NooNAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lVebb City, in the county of J asper and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Shiners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoe shiners, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a shoe shiner in which the guide wires for the polishing cloth are hinged to the base and are adapted to be folded underneath the same to occupy but little space when not in use and to also hold the covers of the blacking boxes in place, said blacking boxes being disposed in recesses in the bottom of the base member of the shiner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a base having pivoted guide wires for the polishing cloth, said base having a ledge or stop for the guide wires when in operative position.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe shiner nade in accordance with my invention, said shiner being shown in use. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the shiner with the guide members disposed underneath the bottom of the base for holding the blacking boxes in place. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the base which is preferably formed of a block of wood of the required din'iensions, said block having at its opposite enos outwardly projecting flanges 2. Fivoted at 3 underneath the flanges 52 are the inwardly bent arms 3 of the guide members l for the polishing cloth. These guide members when thrown outward in position for use, as shown in Fig. l, are held in proper horizontal position by means of the stop shoulders 5 formed by the projecting flanges 2.

When the shiner is not in use the guide members at are swung underneath the base member 1 for holding the covers 8 on the boxes 7, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, thus also disposing the guide arms within the contour of the base 1.
In use, the guide members 4 are thrown out from the position shown in Fig. 2, said members being stopped by the shoulders 5. The boxes 7 are then removed from the base for use in polishing the shoes, and the polishing cloth a is passed over the shoe and underneath the guide members 4, the operator grasping the ends of the polishing cloth a and pulling it back and forth alternately by one hand and then the other. The upper surface 9 of the base 1 may be utilized for advertising purposes.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a shoe shiner made in accordance with my invention is simple in construction, will hold the polishing materials in place within the base, and that the guide members for the polishing cloth may be swung underneath the block for holding the covers 011 the boxes of polisiiing materials, said guide members when thrown out being held-in horizontal positions by the shoulders 5.
I claim A shoe shiner comprising a block or base having projecting end flanges, guide members having inwardly extending arms at their ends pivoted underneath the flanges, said block having recesses in the underside thereof for containing boxes of polishing materials, said guide members being adapted to be swung underneath the block and boxes for holding said boxes.
