Description

(ModelQ) E. MORRIS.
5 BRUSH. No. 555,554. Patented Ma'r.3 ,1896.
&
. WITNESSES: I lNVENTOR i 2 UM.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMA MORRIS, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 555,654, dated March 3, 1896.
Application filed June 8, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMMA MORRIS, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes and Dirt- Collectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to brushes or sweepers, and is designed to produce a simple and eifective device for dusting or sweeping floors, tables, or other surfaces or articles and at the same time collecting and taking up the dust, dirt, crumbs, or other substances that may be deposited thereon, the means by which the dust, dirt, or other substances are collected consisting of a peculiarly-constructed box or receptacle connected with the broom or brush and operating in connection therewith.
v The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improvement; Fig. 2, a transverse section thereof, and Fig. 3 an end elevation showing a hinged door for obtaining access to the box or receptacle.
In the practice of my invention I employ a box or casing A of any desired length, which is preferably much wider at the base than at the top, and which is contracted transversely toward the top, as shown in cross-section in Fig. 2. The bottom of the casing A is open and is provided with an inwardly and upwardly directed flange B, which extends partially around .it, thus forming a chamber 0, as clearly shown in said Fig. 2, the ends of the casing being also provided with the flange B. The top of the casing is preferably provided with a longitudinal slot D, which extends throughout its length, and one end thereof is cut down, as shown at E, to admit of the proper connection therewith of the handle F of the brush.
The back G of the brush is secured in the top of the case, so that the bristles will extend to or slightly through the bottom thereof, as shown, and is held in position by screws, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or in any other manner.
The end H of the box or casing may be put on after the brush is inserted, or the brush fierial No. 552,069. (Model) and box or casing may be connected in any other way, and it is not necessary that the slot D be formed in the top of the latter, these being details of construction which are immaterial.
A door J is hinged to the rear end of the casing, through which access to the interior thereof may be had to remove the material collected in the chamber 0 or for any other purpose, and this door is provided with a latch or other fastening device K.
The operation will be apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. As the brush is passed quickly over the floor or the surface of a table or other article, the dust, dirt, crumbs or other substances thereon will be thrown into the chamber 0, as will be readily understood, and whenever desired such substances may be removed through the door J.
The entire device is simple in construction and effective in operation, and can be constructed at alsmall cost.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a dirt and dust collector, the combination of a casing having an open bottom provided with an inwardly and upwardly directed flange, whereby a chamber is formed around the opening in the bottom of the easing, and a brush secured in the top of the casing the bristles of which extend through the open bottom, substantially as described.
2. In a dirt and dust collector, the combination of a casing having an open bottom provided with an inwardly and upwardly directed flange, whereby a chamber is formed around the opening in the bottom of the easing, and a brush secured in the top of the casing the bristles of which extend through the open bottom and a door hinged at the rear end of the casing to afford access to the interior of the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of June,
EMMA MORRIS. Witnesses WM. J MORRIS, THos. W. CLARK.
