DUST-PAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,942, dated March 1-5, 18,81.

Application led May 8, 1,878.

To all whom` it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE MACARDLE, of Pecatonica, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dust- Pans, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a drop-apron and the supports of a dustpan.

In Figures l and 2, A is the dropapron, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View ofthe same. rlhis apron A is formed with sides a a projecting beyond plane surface, and having slots b b to receive the journals d d', on which it rotates and by which it is held in proper position to the main body of the dust-pan, as may be seen in the sectional View, Fig. 1, and the perspective view,'Fig. 2. On the back under side of the apron A is a fiange or rib, c e, formed at right angle to the Aplane surface of apron. Now, when it is desirable to throw the apron out of the pan upon the fioor, the fiange or rib e e comes in contact with the bottom of' pan B, and, resting on the bottom of the pan, forms agate and prevents thesweepings from falling out of the pan, at the Sametime making arm support for the platform ofthe apron A. 'lhe slots b b in the projecting portion of the sides at o c admit the apron to move up or down about the journals or rivets d d', which secure it to the sides fj" ofthe dust-pan, causing it to work free from stiffness or binding, also facilitating it to more perfectly conform to any nnevenness ofthe iioor. When the apron A is turned over into the main body B of' the dust-pan the iiange or rib e e is out ofthe Way, and a chute or mouth is formed, as seen 1n Fig. 2, through which the sweepings may be discharged.

The main bodyBofthe dust-panissupported, when placed on the iioor, by the angular-constructed and diamond-pointed legs C C', set at an angular and bracing position to its back corners, and the sides of' the pan, by their inner top parts, straddling the corners just above the bottom, and firmly secured in this position to the pan by their inner angular parts being partly filled with common tinners solder, as shown in Fig. l at t', thus'forming solid and strong supports in combination with thediange g g, which is formed by turning the front edge of the bot-tom B of the pan abruptly downward at about or nearly right angle to the under side of the bottom B.

When it is desirable to use this dust-pan in sweeping it is set on the floor, resting on Athe angular-shaped legs O C and the iiange g g. The drop-apron A is thrown out of the pan, its iree part resting on the floor overrea'chin g the flange gg on the bottom B of' the pan. Now, when the sweepings are being swept in tothis dust-pan the pressure of the broom on the drop-apron A, which overlaps the iiange gg ofthe bottom of the pan, will cause this flange to sink into thel carpet or press on the door, and with the angulanshaped and diamondpointed legs O O will hold the dust-pan to its place and prevent the slightest slipping. The

iiange gg, being turned abruptly downward and mainly supporting the pressure on the drop-apron A by means of' the bearing of' its fiange c e on the bottom B being back of and beyond this liange g g, will create a leverage power, and thus additional pressure will be brought to bear on the flange g g, thereby causing it to adhere more firmly to the iioor, at the' same time making a strong support to the front parts of the dust-pan and greatly releasing the stra-in of lateral pressure on the legs O O', and will check any tendency ot' the legs O O to separate or in any Way injure the strands or fibers of' the carpet while resist ing any pressure.

I claim as my inventionl. An apron, A, having a flange, e e, and projecting sides a a', having slots b b', for the purpose herein set forth and described.

2. The compound support of the drop-apron A. madeby the combination of its flange e e and the flange g g on the front of the bottom of the dust-pan, substantially as described, and f'or the purpose set forth.
