Be it known that I, ROBERT THOMAS CUM- MINGs, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Maysville, in the county of Mason and StateV of Kentucky, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Boot-Cleaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in cleaners for boots and shoes; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. The object of my invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, and thereby render them more efficient and durable in use and less expensive to manufacture.

The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is more fully understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings', in whichM Figure 1 is atop plan view of the device, the cover being in its elevated position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, the cover lbeing in its closed position; and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4 in Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a suitable base, preferably of rectangular form, upon which is pivotallymounted a swinging frame 2, provided with a central cleaner 3 for the bottom or sole of a boot or shoe and two side cleaners 4 for the sides or edges of the same. The frame is preferably of a three-sided rectangular form,` as shown, and has its end 5 pivotally connected to one end of the base 1 by a couple of staples 6 or in any other suitable manner which will per-A .mit said frame to be swung up to the dottedline position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings when the device is not in use. The sides 7 of the frame 1 are connected by a transverselyextending plate 8, upon which is secured the transversely-disposed central cleaner 3. The latter may be constructed of wood, metal, hard rubber, or any other suitable material and has upon its upper side angularly-disposed ribs or corrugations 9 and a brush 10.

Said ribs or corrugations 9, which form a rigid rubbing-surface, are preferably arranged, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, so that they converge toward each other, and the bristles of the brush 10 are secured in a V-shaped recessed portion ofthe cleaner, as shown. The side cleaners 4 are secured upon the outer ends of angularly-disposed springarms 12, which have their inner ends secured upon the plate 8, as shown at 13. Each of said cleaners consists of a small rectangular body having its upper and inner side formed with intersecting ribs or corrugations 14, which provide a roughened rubbing-surface, and with a diagonally disposed groove or channel in which is secured a brush 15, as shown.

If desired, the frame 2 may be provided with a cover 16, which is preferably pivotally mounted, as shown at 17, so that it can be swung back, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

The use, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying' drawings. It will be seen that when a person rubs his boot or shoe upon the central cleaner 3 and between the two side ones, 4, all mud, dirt, snow, or the likewill be quickly removed from the same by the rubbers and the brushes upon said cleaners. By pivotally mountingl the frame 2 the same may be swung to the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings to permit the mud and dirt to be easily removed from beneath the same, the front ends of the sides 7 of the frame being cut away, as shown, to permit the latter to be readily engaged and elevated.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A boot-cleaner having a cleaning device provided with angularly-disposed ribs, and a brush at one side of said device in the angle formed by said ribs, and further provided IOO With inclined outvvardly-diverging spring'- arms inclined laterally toward each other and having their inner ends secured on the cleaning device and provided at their outer ends,

on their opposing faces, with cleeningdevices,

substantially as described.
