DOOR-MAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,291, dated July 13, 1886.

Application filed March 28, 1885. Serial No. 160,509. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, SOPHIA M. FEIN, ofCiu cinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Door-Mat, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of doormats which are commonly used in front ofin and out side doors for the purpose of wiping and cleaning the foot-wear of entering persons.

The object of my invention is to provide a better mat in general, but more especially to provide a mat which is always clean and dry. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my entire mat. Fig. 2 is 'a longitudinal section of it on the linem m. Four pieces, a a a a", preferably of wood, are suitably connected by mortising, tenouing, screwing, nailing, or by wooden dowels, so as to form a rigid frame, A. A crosspiecc, a", is put bet-ween the pieces a and a"; and connected to them, as shown in drawings. Pieces a and a (in my modified form a") are provided on their inner side with a series of holes, b, into which are inserted loosely wooden -rods B. Pieces a a* are on their inner side and a little below the wooden rods B, provided with a groove 0, in which rests and slides a plate, (J, of tin or sheetiron. The rear edge of this plate is supported by a lip, 0, extending from piece o The balance of the frame A is closed from below with a board, d, which thus forms the bottom of the shallow receptacle D. In the middle of this receptacle is placed a scraper, E, whose scraping-edge e rests generally below the level of the frame-work, being heldthere by a spiral spring, 6, placed at the other side of pivot 6. (See Fig. 2.) A plate, 6, fastened by downward-extending flanges to bottom (2, fills out the empty space above the depressed scraper.

In using the scraper the'person steps or presses with onefoot on the scraper, about at efiwhich operation presents the scraping-edge on the other side. The balance of receptacle D on the two sides of the scraper is filled out with some common kind of mats, L L, of a bushy nature.

This mat presents to the user three ways of k caught below the rollers by the sheet (3, from whence it is easily removed whenever necessary by raising the mat on its edge,w hcn the dirt falls out through the space left between sheet 0 and part of framed, as shown at F, Figs. 1 and 3. This mat may be manufactured in different sizes to suit different purposes and also in different styles. For instance, the part with the soft mats and scraper may be in the mid dle and rollers on bot-h sides; or soft mats may be on the two sides of the rollers, or only on one side, as shown in my preferred form in Fig. 1; or the mat may consist of rollers only, as shown in my modified form, Fig. 4.

If desirable, the'mat may be hinged or 0therwise fastened permanently to the door-sill.

What I claim,and desi re to cover by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. The combination of frame A, rollers B, plate O,with bottom (I, scraper E, and brushy mats L, as described.

2. The scraper E, consisting ofmovable top part havingscraping-edge 0, being pivoted at c to a permanent bottom plate, in combination with spiral spring 0.

3. The combination of frame A, rollers B, plate 0, with bottom cl and brushy mat-s L.
