DISH-DRAINER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Fn'rnr. J. B. MULLER, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Dish-Drainers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionf This invention relates more particularly to a device for household use in which dishes to be drained may be properly supported within the same, and which when inverted may be used as a scouring board for knives and other household articles.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and etlicient device which may be easily constructed and which is so .made as to provide a receptacle when in one position which is adapted to hold the dishes on edge or otherwise so that the same may be drained properly after being washed, and which is adapted to hold a board or similar surface to adapt the device to provide means whereby knives, forks or other articles may be properly scoured or cleaned, thus overcoming the objection to having separate devices for such purposes, and to construct the device so that the different features may cooperate to form a strong unitary and useful article.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device in which the draining feature of the invention may serve as a frame for the scouring feature and the latter as a means to strengthen and support the bottom of the receptacle, and in which suitable drainage and ventilating means may be provided.

lith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and will thenbe pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of one form of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the device showing the brackets folded over within the receptacle. Fig. 8 is a transverse section with one of the brackets broken away; and Fig. 11 is a transverse section similar to Fig. 3 showing how the waste water drained from the dishes may be allowed to pass from within the receptacle.

or of any other desired form, and comprises a marginal wall 11, and between the upper and lower edges ofthe marginal wall is a bottom or member 12 forming a receptacle 13 on one side and a recess 14; on the other side of said bottom or member 12. This bottom 12 is corrugated, as at 15, against which the edges of the dishes are adapted to rest while being drained so as to be supported in an upright position, and pivotally held between the sides 16 and 17 of the wall 11 so as to project above the receptacle are the brackets 18, one at or near each end of the body portion. These brackets are piv otally held to the sides and may be substantially U-shaped and are each provided with a transverse rod 19 for strengthening purposes and are so arranged that they may be swung downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, within the receptacle when the device is not in use, and may be placed at an angle to assist in supporting and holding the dishes to be drained properly, said wall 11 of the body having its ends 2O and 21 provided with suitable handles 22 whereby the device may be readily carried.

The corrugations 15 of the bottom 12 may be of any desired form. As shown they are substantially semi-cylindrical, and fitting in the recess 14 between the ends and sides of the wall 11 is a board or other member 23 which is adapted to be held in said recess under the receptacle in such a way that the wall 11 forms a support for the block or member Q3 and the latter also serves as a means to strengthen and sustain the walls as well as the bottom 12. This scouring member Q3 may be provided with semi-cylindrical grooves 2e which when opposed to the grooves formed by the corrugation 15 make a plurality of substantially round openings extending transversely through the device, the walls 1G and 17 being provided with openings 25 which are in alinementwith the openings formed by the corrugations in the bottom and the grooves in the scouring member 23. These transverse openings permit a circulation of air on the inner side of the scouring member to assist in drying the latter member, for when said member is made of wood it will absorb considerable moisture or water which may be used while scouring or which the wood will absorb when the device is being used as a dish drainer. By this means the board or scouring member 23 may by the circulation of air on the CIK inner side be more readily dried, and while the device is adapted for two purposes the parts of the draining receptacle will co` operate with the scouring feature one to stiengthen the other and each to assist in making the other more effective.

In l* ig. t the construction is substantially the same as shown in Figs. l to 3, except that the corrugations 15 ai'e provided with a number of openings 26 whereby the water passing from the dishes while being drained may enter the openings formed by the cori'ugations and the grooves in the scouring member so that the water may pass from the receptacle 13 into the sink or other place in which the device may be located.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and etlicient device is provided whereby dishes may be properly held and drained and the device when inverted adapted to be used for scouring knives, forks and other articles; that said device is simple in construction and may be readily made and assembled; that the parts serving for one purpose will assist and cooperate with the other feature in making a simple device capable of different uses, and that simple means are provided whereby air may be made to pass transversely thereof or the waste in drainage to pass between the receptacle and the scouring member laterally from the device.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

l. In a device of the character described,

a corrugated bottom forming grooveson the under side thereof, and a grooved member secured beneath said bottom and having its grooves opposed to the grooves of the corrugatioiis to provide transverse open ings through the device.

2. A device of the character described having a marginal wall and corrugated bottom located between the upper and lower edges of the wall forming grooves on the under side of said bottom, a grooved member secured beneath said bottom, and having its grooves opposed to the grooves of the corrugations to provide transverse openings through the device, said wall being provided with openings registering with the ends of said transverse openings, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. A device of the character described having a marginal wall and corrugated bottom located between the upper and lower edges of the wall forming grooves on the under side of said bottom, a grooved meinber secured beneath said bottom and having its grooves opposed to the grooves of the corrugations to provide transverse openings through the device, said wall being provided with openings registering with the ends of said transverse openings, and brackets pivot-ally held to the sides of the marginal walls at the ends thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.

at. In a device of the character described, a perforated corrugated bottom forming grooves on the under side thereof, and a grooifed member secured beneath said bottoni and having its grooves opposed to the grooves of the corrugations to provide transverse openings through the device.
