LEGGING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORRIS RosENwAssER, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a speci fication.

This invention relates to garments and more particularly to leggings.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide means whereby the application of the legging is facilitated and its fit about the leg and foo-t improved, the said means comprising essentially a stirrup fixedly secured to the legging body and to one of the flaps, and detachably secured to the other flap, together with means for inducing an operative strain between the stirrup and the upper part of the legging.

In the art heretofore it has been custommy to secure the stirrup only to the lower edge of the legging body and to one of the meeting flaps thereof. By such construction it is impossible to achieve the desired snug connection of the lower end of the legging to the foot, one of the flaps having no direct union with the stirrup. By my invention the entire lower end of the legging attaches to the stirrup, so that it is snugly drawn down to and maintained in position about the foot on all sides. Furthermore, by making the detachable connection of the stirrup to one of the flaps adjustable, it is possible to vary in some measure the operative length of the stirrup, so that the lower edges of the legging may be drawn as closely down to the foot as desired.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a stirrup having the capacities above set out, at but very little more expense than that of the ordinary form, and just as easily assemblable with the legging.

Still another object of the invention is to so form that part of the stirrup which is detachable that it constitutes a hand-hold in the operation of inserting the foot.

Another object is to produce a strain between the stirrup and the upper part of the legging, so that a snug fit of all the parts is constantly maintained in the stirrup.

constituting the invention, will be fully described, the scope of the application thereof being indicated by the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have illustrated a merely preferred form of embodiment: Figure l is a perspective showing a legging equipped with my improvement, as in position upon the'leg; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view, partly broken away, showing my improved stirrup and the manner of its connection with the legging.

Referring now more specifically to the drawings, my invention is shown applied to a puttee legging indicated at 1, which in its general features is of any usual or preferred construction. One novel feature of my construction, however, should be referred to here. This is the cutting away of the lower forward corner of the outer flap, as indicated at 9, the inner flap, which is of full extent, serving by itself to cover the instep, thus avoiding undesirable multiplication of thickness of material over the instep. The said cut-out 9 is so located that when the legging is in place the lower forward edge of the outer flap is positioned just above the instep. The reason for this arrangement will be cleveloped presently.

The legging is adapted to be placed about the leg, the free vertical edges 2 and 8 coming at the side portion of the legging and preferably lapping one upon the other. Any usual means for fastening the legging about the leg may be employed. In the present case I have shown a strap fastened at the upper and lower portions of the legging, passing spirally about the same, and main tained in proper position by guide-loops. Said strap is secured at one end to the outer flap at the lower forward cut out part 9 thereof. The adjustable connection of the stirrup, hereinafter described, being also at this part 9, and substantially in alinement with the fastening of said strap, it follows that if said flap be, by the adjustable connection of the stirruptherewith, drawn toward the stirrup; and if also the spiral strap be drawn up about the leg, the outer flap will by the opposing strains be drawn taut along the part 9, so that there will be a snug fit of the outer flap over and above the instep.

Thus there is a direct and advantageous relation between the device which secures the legging to the foot (the stirrup), and the device which secures it about the leg (the winding strap).

4t indicates a stirrup, comprising a strip of suitable material, doubled upon itself as indicated at 5. This doubled strip is secured to the body of the legging at the lower edge thereof, at a point approximately opposite the meeting line of the edges 2 and 3, said point being indicated in Fig. 2 by the numeral 6. point 6 under and across the legging, the superposed sections 7 and 8 being preferably sewed together through a part of their eX- tent to constitute the stirrup member proper. At some suitable point, as 10, the members 7 and 8 are freed of this superposed. union, and diverge, member 7 extending and being securely fastened to the inner flap 11 of the legging, while the member 8 extends out for detachable connection with the outer flap 12. As shown, for the sake of strength in a part that is subjected to considerable manipulation, I prefer to make the member 8 of such length that it may be doubled upon itself, the superposed parts being sewed together, and the end extending up to the point where the members 7 and 8 separate. Thus it will be seen that there is formed a stirrup-strap double-thick throughout its extent, of a single piece of material, and yet having the integral extension 14.

lit has been stated that the doubled end 15 of member 8 is adapted to be detachably connected to the outer flap 12. To this end I may provide a swing buckle l6 pivoted in a loop 17 secured to flap 12, there being also a keeper 18.

In the use of the device it will be seen that the body of the legging is always connected with the flap 11 by means of the stirrup and extension 7. The legging is thus in a measure ready-shaped, and is easily manipulated in putting it on. The end 15 is of course free from engagement with buckle 1.6, and it is necessary, after the foot has been inserted in the stirrup, to engage the end 15 with the buckle, thus directly connecting the lower edge of the legging body with the lower edges of the flaps 11 and 12. The fastening of the legging about the leg is accom plished by means of the spirally arranged strap heretofore referred to. The effect of drawing the flap toward the stirrup, by means of buckle 16 and drawing it in the opposite drection by means of the spiral strap, has already been explained.

It may be noted, as a preferred construction, and as furthering the object last referred to besides subserving the unification of the garment as a whole when applied, that the winding strap is aflixedat the lower end to one flap (here the outer flap), and at the The strip extends from this other end to the other flap, the connection to said last named flap being detachable, as by means of the buckle 19 shown in Fig. 1.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be taken as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense. Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A'legging adapted to be placed about the leg, and a one piece stirrup attached to the lower edge of the legging at a plurality of more than two points, the connection at one of said points only being detachable.

2. A legging adapted, to be wrapped about the leg and having meeting flaps, a one piece stirrup fixedly secured to the said legging and to one of said flaps, and provided with means for connecting it detachably to the other flap.

3. A legging adapted,to be wrapped about the leg and having meet-ing flaps, a one piece stirrup secured to the said legging and to one of said flaps, and provided with means for connecting it adjustably to the other flap.

4:. A legging adapted to be wrapped about the leg and having meeting flaps, a one piece stirrup secured to the said legging and to one of the flaps and provided with means for connecting it detachably to the other flap, a strap secured to said last named flap adjacent to the point of said detachable connection and adapted to wind spirally about the legging, and means for securing the strap at the upper end of the legging.

5. A legging adapted to be wrapped about the leg and having meeting flaps, a one piece stirrup secured to the said legging and one of the flaps and provided with means for connecting it detachably to the other flap, a strap secured to said last named flap adjacent to the point of said detachable connection and adapted to wind spirally about the legging, said flaps being provided with keeperoops for said strap, and means for securing the strap at the upper end of the flap opposite the one to which it is secured at the lower part of the legging.

6. A legging provided with meeting flaps, a one-piece stirrup secured positively to the body of the legging and to one of said flaps, and having an integral extension connected detachably to the other flap.

7. A legging provided with meeting flaps, a one-piece stirrup secured positively to the body of the legging and to one of said flaps, and having an integral extension connected to the other flap, the connection to one of said flaps being detachable and attachable.

8. A legging provided'with a pair of meeting flaps, a stirrup comprising a strip of material whose ends are doubled upon it toward the middle and secured toit, one of said ends extending free of the doubled body from the middle, one end of said strip being connected to the legging body, and the other end and the extension being connected, respectively, to the said flaps.

9. A legging provided with a pair of meeting flaps, a stirrup comprising a strip of material whose ends are doubled upon it toward the middle and secured to it, one of said ends extending free of the doubled body from the middle, one end of said strip being connected to the legging body, and the other end and the extension being connected, respectively, to the said flaps, one of said last named connections being detachable.

10. A legging provided with a pair of meeting flaps, a stirrup comprising a strip of material whose ends are doubled upon it toward the middle and secured to it, one of said ends extending free of the doubled body from the middle, one end of said strip being connected to the legging body, and the other end and the extension being connected, respectively, to the said flaps, the first of said last named connections being adjustable and detachable.
