Be it known that I, FRANK M. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Adjusting Vests, Trousers, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'and to the letters of reference marks thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for adjusting the waist bands of trousers, vests, etc., and the object in view is to dispense with the usual buckles and straps used for this purpose, and comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my invention to a vest. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the rear of the vest showing the parts in dotted lines. Fig. 8 is an e11- larged detail perspective view showing the manner of applying the device to the vest. Fig. i is an edge view of supporting means for the tension straps, and Fig. 5 is a detail view in rear elevation of the form shown in Fig. i. Fig. 6 is an elevation showing the application of my invention to the waist band of-trousers. Fig. 7 is a view of the rear face of the trouser bands, showing the position in dotted lines that the tension straps assume. Fig. 8 is a detail view showing a slightly modified form of means for supporting the device as applied to trousers. Fig. 9 is a detail view of a buckle forming a part of the invention. Fig. 10 is a detail View of a clasp forming a part of the invention. Fig. 11 is a sectional view showing the application of my invention to trousers. back of a vest to which are fastened by suitable stitching the linen side pieces B having elastic straps C to which the linen straps l) are attached in any suitable manner, as by stitching. Each of said straps D is bent upon itself to form a loop D, and D designates a buckle, a detail of one of which is shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, about which the end of the strap D is fastened in the manner shown clearly in Fig. 3. There are two of the side pieces B fastened preferably adjacent to the side seams of the vest and in alineinent with each other, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

E, E designate coverings for said side pieces, the elastic straps and portions of the linen straps D, the adjacent ends of the coverings E being left open to allow the linen straps D to move freely therethrough while the elastic portions are obscured.

It will be noted by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings that I provide two sets of my tension straps when used upon vests, one set being positioned in the back of the vest adjacent to the arm pit, while the other set is positioned about the hip measurements of the vest. Intermediate the ends of the coverings E are formed two slits or openings F through which the shank portions I of the buttons I are adapted to pass, details of which are shown in Figs. & and 5 of the drawings, said shank portion being made of two strands of wire, each of which is bent in the manner shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings and affording means whereby the two loops D may be slipped into the loops formed thereby.

In Figs. 6 to 11 of the drawings, I have shown the application of my invention to the waist band of trousers in which the same apparatus is applied to the face of the lining upon the inner surface of the band of the trousers and the side pieces D are stitched or otherwise fastened to each seam at the side and each side piece has the usual elastic strap C fastened thereto and the linen straps D attached to the adjacent ends of the elastic straps G and a suitable covering E. But, instead of the particular form of buttons shown in Figs. 4: and 5, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of device consisting of a plate H having two springactuated jaws H hinged thereto and adapted to be normally held in open positions by means of a spring fastened about the hinged portion of the device. Each of said jaws is provided with a curved segment slot J adapted to be engaged by a tongue K of a clasp K, views of which are shown in Figs. 10 and 11 of the drawings. The clasp K is provided with a slot L for the reception of the loop formed by bending the strap D upon itself.

In adjusting the form shown in Figs. 6 to 12 to the trousers, the two jaws H are positioned in the manner shown in dotted lines in Fig. 11 and inserted through the slit S formed along the rear meeting line of the trouser band, after which they are turned in opposite directions as shown in Fig. 11 and the tongues K caught into the slots J, thereby holding the parts securely together.

In practice, it is my plan to construct my devices as improved articles of manufacture and which may be furnished to the tailor trade and manufacturers of clothing so that the devices may be applied to vests and trousers already completed without the usual straps.

In applying the devices, they are attached in the manner shown and described to the lining of the trouser band or vest and the elastic portions as well as the side pieces are covered with openings allowing the linen straps to be drawn back and forth and the buckles adjusted to adapt the tension straps to various sizes. The buttons to which the loops are fastened, it will be observed, are passed through the openings in the vest or trousers from the inside out and the ends of the loops connected thereto in the manner shown in either of the modified forms illustrated in Figs. l, 5 and S of the drawings.

It will be noted that by the provision of a device made as shown and described I dis pense with the usual ends of straps, buckles, etc., and provide means whereby the size may be easily and quickly regulated by simply shortening or lengthening the loops formed in the linen straps which are fastened to the removable button or fastening means held by the garment.

Tension straps for vests, trousers, etc., comprising side pieces adapted to be fastened to the lining of a garment, elastic straps secured to said side pieces, non-elastic pieces fastened to the elastic straps, a cover upon the inside of the garment for the side pieces and elastic straps with an opening to allow the non-elastic strap to move freely back and forth, a plate having a shank portion adapted to pass through the garment back and forth, a plate having a shank portion adapted to pass through the garment intermediate said straps and having spring actuated hinged wings, one of which is slotted, clasps fastened one to each of said nonelastic straps and each having a tongue adapted to engage a slot in one of said wings.

3. Tension straps for vests, trousers, etc, comprising side pieces adapted to be fastened to the lining of a garment, elastic straps secured to said side pieces, non-elastic pieces fastened to the elastic straps, a cover upon the inside of the garment for the side pieces and elastic straps with an openingto allow the non-elastic strap to move freely back and forth, a plate having a shank portion adapted to pass through the garment intermediate said straps and having springactuated hinged wings, one of which is slotted, each of said non-elastic straps being bent to form an adjustable loop, a clasp secured to each loop and provided with a tongue adapted to engage a slot in one of said hinged wings.
