T0 all whom zt may concern Be it-known that I, J. S. DU BOIS, of St. Louis, in the cuux aty of St. Louis, und State of Missourri, h. w:e invented a. new anti improved Railroad-Cztr Spit-t0on; and I do= heteby deelare that the follqwing, is a full, elea.r, aud exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to rrlake and use the Same, reference b'eing had to the accompa-nying drzuvings, forming a'pa.rt of this speoifiezmt-ion, in which Figure '1 represents a. vertical central seotiou of my i'mproved milroad-car spittoon.

'll1einvention consists in the generell combinzttioh With the spittoon of two perforated bottoms andspringr fastenings, all so arranged that the*operation of the device will be entirely satisfactory and perfect.

Through a. circular, oval, or other aperture of the floor, is fitted theshell B oi' the spittoon, which shell is of ciylinrhical 01 other suitable form, with an outwardprojecting flange, a, at its upper end, said fl:mge supporting the spittoon on the floor.
T0 the sides 0f the shell B are fitted two springs, G zmd D, which, with shoulders b, fit under the floor A, t0 prevent the spittoon from being tanken out. 'll1eir upper encls reach thro1igh the floor, und a re concealed by elevated portions 0f the Hnge a. VVhen they are pressed in, the spittoon can be removed.
Tl1e bottom E of the spittoon is a. perfomted platte, hinged at c to the shell B, the hinge being below the spring D, as shown.
Above the bottom E is aminged, in the spittoon, a.
false bottom, F, which is made 0f wire netting, 'or other finely-perforaterl nmten'al.
The screen F is pivoted by a pin, (Z, whic h is fitted through the spittoon at right angles t0 the pin of the hinge c.
One end of the sereeu is weighted, so tliat it will swing down as long as not supported. by a.- pin, e, which piqiects from the bottom E.
'lhe spring G is pivoted by the pin d, so tha.t it ean turn 011 the same, and has a. hook, j, at its lower end, as in fig. 3. This ho'ok catches under a pin, g, project-ing from the bottom E, ancl thereby holde the intter closed.
'10 the spring G is fastened n smaller spring, h, which, with its free end, fits through an aperture in the end f the pin d.
All liquid mzttter put into the spittoon will flow 0ut through the perforated sereen und bottom, while dirt and 'solid matter will Be arrested by the screen, so z'1s not to clog the apertnres oi' the bottonrE.
