s i s- 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY G. RICE, OF LOUISIANA, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN COFFEE POTS AND STRAINERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,683, dated June 11, 1878; application filed April 30, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY 0. RICE, of Louisiana, in the county of Pike and State of Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Pot-s for Filtering and Clarifying Tea and Coffee, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to pots for tea and coffee, provided with bags of some textile material for containing the tea or coffee; and it consists in providing the pot with a head or ledge on the inside and the bag with an open ring of elastic material around its rim, which is sprung into the mouth of the pot and rests upon the bead or ledge mentioned. An arched guard-wire across the spout-opening is also provided, whereby the bag is kept from clogging it up, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved pot. Fig. 2 is a detached view, showing the guard-wire. Fig. 3 is a detached view, showing the open ring for the top of the bag.
A is an ordinary coffee-pot, and B is the spout of the same. 0 is a bag of some textile fabric or material suitable for the purpose. This bag is to contain the ground coffee. Attached to the upper edge of the bag in some convenient manner is an open ring, D, made of elastic wire or its equivalent. The ends of this ring, beingopen, enable it to be compressed enough to enter the mouth of the pot readily, and when in it rests upon a ledge, E, on the inside of the pot. The elasticity of the ring keeps it snugly in place, and presses the rim of the bag tightly against the wall of the pot all around.
The ledge E may be a bead spun in the metal of the pot itself, as shown, and I prefer this method of producing a ledge to any other.
G is an arched guard-wire placed horizontally across the opening into the spout B, to prevent the bag from stopping the outlet when the pot is tilted for pouring.
By compressing the ring slightly the bag may be readily removed for cleaning the pot or renewing the fabric of the bag.
I claim- 1. A filtering-bag, C, of textile material, provided with an open elastic hoop or ring, D, arranged in its mouth, and adapted to expand outwardly againstthe wall of the containingvessel, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a pot provided with an internal ledge, bead, or other projection with a bag of some textile material and an open outwardly-expanding ring or hoop arranged around the mouth of the bag, adapted to be compressed so that it may easily pass into the mouth of the vessel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of a pot provided with the bead E, bag 0, ring I), and the guardwire G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY 0. RICE.
