Be it known that I, SIMON J. FREEMAN, of Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Strainers for Coffee- 'Pots, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a strainer adapted to be located in the inside of a coffee-pot or like receptacle, which will be auxiliary to the usual fixed or stationary strainer.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the auxiliary strainer that it may be expeditiously and conveniently removed'from the body or placed in position thereon.

Another object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary strainer which will have two straining-surfaces, each of which may be readily cleaned, and whereby when the auxiliary strainer is used in connection with the coffee-pot the liquid which is poured from the pot will be perfectly clear.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set fort-h, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding, parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the coffee-pot with the lid open, illustrating the strainer as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an outer face view of the inner or main portion of the auxiliary strainer, and Fig. 4 is a similar View of an additional strainer used in connection with the one illustrated in Fig. 3.

The body of the coffee-pot embraced by the spout Bis provided with the usual or stationary strainer 10: In connection with this fixed strainer an auxiliary strainer is employed, and said auxiliary strainer consists of a strainin g-surface 1 1, preferably of perforated metal, and from the upper edge of the straining-surface 11 a flange .12 is horizontally projected, the forward or outer edge of the flange being of a contour which will adapt it to fit closely to the inner contour of the body of the coffeepot at the top and opposite the spout. .The flange 12 is provided with a centralopening 13 and also with hooks or

14, 15, and 16, one of which is located at the central bow portion of the flange and one at each of its ends. A second strainer 17, of a finer mesh or having finer openings than the inner strainer-plate 11, is used in connection with the latter, and this forward and finer strainer 17 is provided at its top witha hook 18, adapted to extend through the opening 13 in the flange of the inner or coarser strainer and engage with the top of the flange 12, as shown in Fig. 2. The top of this forward or intermediate strainer 17 is made flat or straight, so that it will have bearing against the under face of the flange 12.

The two auxiliary strainers 11 and 17 are preferably of the same shape, the shape of each being such that it will engagewith the inner surface of the body around the stationary strainerlO; but the forward or intermediate strainer 17 is of less dimensions than the rear or inner strainer 11, so that while the inner or rear strainer engages at its margin with the body of the pot the intermediate strainer 17 will practically bear upon the forward face of the inner or rear strainer 11. The inner or rear strainer 11 stands at an acuteangle to its flange 12 and inclines downwardly and forwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and the intermediate strainer 17 has somewhat of the same inclination.

In operation, the two strainers l1 and 17 having been connected, they are placed in position on the coffee-pot by causing the

14, 15, and 16 to engage with the upper forward edge of the body of the coifee-pot, the

central hook 141: being opposite the center of the spout D, and the side hooks 15 and 16 one at each side of the said spout. When coffee is poured out from a coffee-pot fitted with the auxiliary strainer, as set forth, the comparatively coarse grounds may pass through the inner or rear strainer 11, but willv be stopped by the intermediate strainer 17, and i the clear liquid passing through this latter strainer will find a ready exit through the stationary strainer 10. The forward or intermediate strainer 17 may be readily separated IOD from the inner or rear strainer, thus enabling each and every part of the attachment to be thoroughly and readily cleaned.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A removable strainer adapted to be placed within a pot, the said strainer consisting of an inner straining-plate provided with a flange, supports for the inner strainingplate arranged for engagement with the body of the pot, and a forward straining-plate having smaller openings than the rear strainingplate, the said forward straining-plate being supported by the flange of the rear strainingplate, for the purpose set forth. I

An auxiliary strainer for coffee pots adapted as an interior strainer, the said auxiliary strainer consisti ng of an inner strainingplate and a flange connected therewith, the inner straining-plate being at an angle to the flange and pendent therefrom, the said flange being provided with supports arranged for engagement with the body of the pot, and a forward straining-plate, serving as an intermediate straining device'when the auxiliary strainer is in position on the body of the pot, the said forward straining-plate having openings of less dimensions than the inner straining-plate and being attached to the flange of the rear straining-plate, for the purpose set forth. r

3. An auxiliary strainer for coffee -pots adapted as an interior strainer, the said auxiliary strainer consisting of a rear strainerplate, a flange connected with the rear strainin g-plate,frorn which the latter is downwardly and forwardly projected at an obtuse angle, the flange being provided with a central opening and with hooks arranged for engagement with the upper edge of the body of the coffeepot to which the attachment is made, and a forward strainer having openings of less dimensions than those of the rear strainer, the forward strainer being provided with a hook arranged to be passed through the opening in the flange of said rear strainer, for the purpose specified.
