Description

25 position.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARGARET MCILVAINE, or IRWIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
SIEVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Manuamrr McILvAINn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irwin, in the county of \Vestmorclaml and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sievcs, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to sieves, and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will include a series of si't'ting members and a support or bowl for interchangeably receiving the members, the said members each being constructed of different mesh so that the sieve will be adapted for use in sifting such materials 'as flour,
coarse or line meals, grain, sand, etc.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sev eral vic\\ 's:-I igure l. is a perspective view of the sieve showing the sitting members detached from the body or bowl. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the sieve showing one of the sitting members in its applied Fig. is an inverted perspective view of the body or bowl men'iber. Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 2 showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
The sieve comprises a body or bowl memher 1 which is preferabl of cylindrical configuration, the walls oY the member being;
provided at the top of the bowl witlran ,out wa-rdly extending flange 2, and at the bottom of the bowl with an inwardly extending flange .3. The flange 3 has mounted thereon a circularscrics of retaining d vices 4. These dev1ces are substantially 0t T-form and each is provided with a horizontally disposed elongated head 5. These heads are 4 'spacedfrom the flange 3 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The-sitting members 6, which are particularly shown in Fig.1 of the drawing, each includes an outer ring 7 to which is attached in any suitable well known manner suitable wire netting 8. The ring is provided with elongatedopenings 9 which are adapted to receive the elongated heads 5 of the fastening devices 4. In use, one of the sitting members 15 inserted in the body member 1 and arranged therein so as to seat against the flange 3, the fastening devices t being extended upwardly through the openings in the ring of the sitting member and then manipulated so that the heads 5 extendt Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 22, 1911. Serial No. 639,932.
Patented June 25, 1912.
the support 10 extends directly beneath the v sifting member after the latter has been operatively arranged in the member 1 and the weight of the material to be operated upon will be substantially whollysupported by the member 10.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the member 1 is substantially the,
same as the member 1 in the preferred form ot my 1nve11t1on. The flange 3 1s substantially identical with the flange 3. In this form the walls of the member 1 are extended below the plane of the flange 3, as,
at The flange'S-i is provided with the revolubly mounted buttons 14 which are engaged with the rin member as hereinbefore described.
secured to the underside of the flange 3.
' The construction described is such that a The sii' ting member support 15. has its rods soldered or otherwi suitably.
sieve is provided which will include a main supporting member and a series of separate sieve members, the said sieve members bein constructed of different gage wire gauze an the said members being interchangeably fitted with the said supporting member so that the sieve of the required type can be readily applied to the supporting member as the occasion may require, and according to the character of the material to be operated upon.
I claim A sieve comprising asubstantially elongated cylindrical member provided at its upper end with-an outwardly extending flange and provided at its lower end with an inwardly extending flange, said flanges being disposed at right angles to the outer and inner walls of the elongated cylindrical mcinber, rods disposed radially upon the bottom of said cylindrical member and bisectin; each other at the central portion of said cylnnlrical member, said rods having their ends secured to the underutaith portion of said bottom flange and ofiset from the i1n-' l fined against the rods and the inwardly derneath portion of said flange so that the extending flange respectively. 10 major portions of the rods lie in the same In testimony whereof I alfix my' signature general plane with the said bottom flange, in presence of two witnesses.
