SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,483, dated March 26, 1901.

Be it known that 1, JOHN FRANCIS POPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Spring- Seat, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vehicle spring-seats, more especially for hicycles, by the use of vertical voluted springs placed under and supporting the seat-covering, thereby giving the seat that resilience so necessary to the comfort of the rider.
My invention consists of an upper frame, to the perimeter of which the leather or other seat-covering is attached, provided with inverted case-like pockets, which pockets fit onto vertical voluted springs mounted on the ends of projecting arms or shafts diverging from a point supported on the vehicle. The action of these vertical springs under pressure gives the seat a comfortable resilience. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of the entire seat with the surface-covering removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section along the broken line WV, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 isavertical section along the broken line X Y of Fig. 1.

The projecting arms or shafts b, c, and d are preferably curved upward for greater strength, and the springs S are preferably secured on their arms or shafts by azshoulder on the inner side and a nut on the outer end, screw-threaded to receive the nut. An additional lock-nut may be provided for greater security. The bearings b c" (1 immediately supporting the vertical voluted springs S should preferably be of a square or rectangular section. The springs S should preferably have their volutes turned on a square axis,
with the volutes close together at bottom, thus giving greater resilience to their upper portion for the same diameter of spring. The pockets 6 and springs S may be fastened together by a wire or chain through the upper volute. 7
If necessary, the seat-cover may be directly supported on top of the vertical volnted springs S and secured to the upper volute of the spring. In such case the pocket 8 would be dispensed with. The perimeter of this framef may be of any convenient shape suitable for a seat.
I am aware that prior to my invention vehicle-seats have been supported on springs, and I do not, therefore, broadly claim all springs; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A vehicle-seat comprising a cover-frame having open-bottom pockets in its under side, a plurality of arms radiating from a common center, and a corresponding series of voluted springs mounted each on one of said arms, each spring being vertically disposed and secured at its center to one of the arms, the outer volnte of the springs fitting within the several pockets of the cover-frame, substantially as set forth.
