Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1915.
Application filed August 24, 1914. Serial No. 858,293. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA BENJAMIN HENRY ANDREW GOURLAY, of the city of Edmonton, in the Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to cabinets and particularly refers to that type adapted to be utilized to display packets of seeds and like paoketed articles, and the objects of the invention are to advantageously display and arrange packeted goods so that they-will be clearly viewed by intending purchasers, to so construct the cabinet that it occupies a minimum of space, to render the cabinet collapsible thereby permitting of its being easily shipped and other objects which will be shown hereafter, and it consists essentially of the improved construction of cabinet particularly described in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
Like letters of referencerefer to like parts in the several drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the seed cabinet which consists of a plurality of concentrically located and disposed cylindrical members 1 which are open at the top and bottom and are provided on the bottom edge of their lateral sides with outwardly radially disposed flanges 2 which terminate in an annular groove 3, the upper edge of the said lateral side being bent inwardly to form a downwardly disposed annular groove 4.
This annular groove 4 of one cylindrical member is adapted to engage with the annular groove 3 of the adjacent cylindrical member so that when the center cylindrical member is lifted vertically each member engages with each consecutive member in rotation whereupon the cabinet assumes the form of a stepped cylindrical pyramid.
The center cylindrical member is formed with a cap 5 frictionally held thereon and having a concentric orifice therethrough surrounded bysa collar 10, the object of which will be made clear hereafter.
B represents a supporting member which is preferably made of two rods or tubes 7 and 8 suitably connected and making threaded engagement with the coupling 9,
to, the top of the the said rod 7 being provided near the top end with a flange 10 rigidly secured thererod 7 being further provided with a thread adapted to make threaded engagement with the threaded socket 11 which is provided with a hook on the top thereof.
The outer periphery of each cylindrical member is provided with radially extending ribs 12 extending outwardlytherefrom and terminating just inside of the annular groove 3 in the flange 2, the outer edge of the said 'ribs being provided with flanges 13 whlch are formed at substantially right angles thereto, thereby forming pockets with the said outer periphery of the said cylindrical member and the flange 2, in which packeted goods are adapted to be arranged and displayed.
In the embodiment illustrated the adjacent ribs 12 are disposed at a suitable angle to each other so that the opposite ribs forming sides of each pocket are substantially parallel.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming that the cabinet is in collapsed condition wherein the circular elements con sisting of members 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all resting on the same plane as the bottom element and are concentrically located there within. In this collapsed form it is capable of being shipped. To extend the cabinet then, the concentric elements are raised just as in a collapsible drinking cup until the grooves 3 of the elements engage the upper grooves 4 of the adjacent lower member which engagement holds the elements in that position, all as in a drinking cup. A base C is provided for the cabinet if it is desired to be used in a fixed position or a rod 7, supported by the base C may extend upwardly through the cap 5 and its collar 10 and carry a hook member 11 whereby the cabinet may be suspended from above.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, could be constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In seed cabinet or the like, and in combination, a plurality of concentrically located and disposed cylindrical members open in the top and bottom, provided With a radial flange extendingfrom the bottom edge of each of said members, such flanges terminating in annular grooves, the top edge of each of the said members being bent over inwardly to formian annular flange adapted to engage With the annular groove in the said flange of the adjacent cylindrical member, radial ribs between said concentric cylindrical membersto form pockets therebetween, and means for supporting said members in an extended position, as for the purpose specified.
2. In a seed cabinet or the like, and in combination, a plurality of concentrically located and disposed cylindrical members open in the top and bottom, provided With a radial flange extending from the bottom edge 30 of each of said members, such flanges terminating in annular grooves, the top edge of each of the said members being bent over inwardly to form an annular flange adapted to engage With the annular groove in the said flange of the adjacent cylindrical member, radial ribs between said concentric cylindrical members to form pockets therebetween, a cap having an orifice therethrough adapted to fit the center cylindrical member, a rod, a flange mounted on the said rod, a socket attached to the said rod and a hook attached to the said socket, as and for the purpose specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
EZRA BENJAMIN HENRY ANDREW GOURLAY.
