a .6 I w res diluted VARICKR. HOLMES, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 85,827, amdJamm/r 12, 1869.
COVER FOR KETTLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the l'ame.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VAnIoK R. HOLMES, of the city of Grand Rapids, county of Kent, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Covers for Kettles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being therein had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure I is a top view of the cover, showing one 'spring, the opening, and parallel wires;
Figure II is a bottom view of the cover, showing the springs, opening, and parallel wires; and
FigureIII is a view of the'small cover to the openings shown in Figs. I and II.
My invention consists of an ordinary tin cover for kettles, with the following changes, additions, and improvements:
To the rim of the cover, marked E, are attached three springs, equidistant from each other, by means of solderor rivets.
with wires, 0 O O, placed parallel to each other, and
fastened by solder to the under side of the cover at their ends.
These wires are placed far enough apart to permit water or other like liquid to flow freely between them, and at the same time retain in the kettle any solid a substance or matter that it may be desirable to retain.
For ordinary purposes, these wires should be placed about one-twelfth of an inch apart.
Wire cloth may also be used, instead of the parallel wires, with like effect, and in such case the meshes should be from one-twelfth to one-eighth of an inch in diameter.
The opening is furnished with a cover, A, made of I The object and use-of my invention are to afford a means of escape for surplus steam, when such escape may be desirable in cooking, without removing the co er of a kettle to afford a strainer, through which water or other liquid may be turned off from a kettle, while solid matter will be retained within it, and also to hold the cover in its place on a kettle while water or other liquid isbeingturned oil, as aforesaid. What I claim as new in my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The kettle-cover above described, provided with springs D, grated opening F, and slide A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim theibregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 11th day of July, A.
