HANNAH A. SIGNOR, OF SCHENEC'IADY, NEW YORK.
STRAIN ER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. ii, ism.
Application filed January 17, 1917. Serial No. 142,869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANNAH A. SIGNOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain. useful Improvements in Strainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to a strainer adapted particularly for straining milk, and the like, and has for an object to provide a strainer comprising relatively few parts presenting substantially smooth surfaces and of such form that access may be readily had thereto for cleansing purposes.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a strainer which comprises a plurality of independent parts adapted to be assembled, and which are provided with a screen through which the milk or other substance to be strained may pass, the screens being of graduated mesh.
The above, and other objects and advantages of this invention will be more particularly brought out in the following specific description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved strainer, showing the parts separated or swung into open position.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the strainer, the parts being assembled and closed.
Referring to this drawing, the strainer comprises three sections 10, 11 and 12. The lower section 10 is the delivery or funnel section and is provided with a relatively fine wire meshing, or screen 13 in its lower end through which the strained liquid is finally discharged. The upper enlarged end of the section 10 is adapted to receive therein the tapering lower end 14 of the intermediate section 11, the tapering end 14 being provided at its lower edge with an intermediate strainer or screen 15 having a mesh slightly larger than that of the screen 13.
The receiving or top section 12 is pro vided with a tapering bottom 16 across the lower end of which is secured a relatively coarse screen or strainer 17 adapted to separate the coarser particles from the liquid being strained. The upper or body portions of the sections 10, 11 and 12 are of substantially the same diameter and are provided at their upper and lower edges with reinforcing beads 18 adapted to abut and support the sections one upon the other when the strainer is closed, as shown in Fig. 2. Hinges 19 and 20 are arranged between the intermediate section 11 and the bottom and top sections 10 and 12 for hingedly connecting the sections together at one side of the strainer. At the opposite side of the strainer, the lower section 10 has pivotally connected thereto a hook 21 the bill 22 of which is adapted to engage in an eye 23 projecting laterally from the top section 12 to hold the three sections when closed. It will be noted that the tapering bottoms 16 and 14: of the upper and intermediate sections are spaced inwardly from the walls of the subj aoent sections so that no recesses are formed in the section and so that access may be readily had to all parts of the same when opened for the purpose of cleansing the inner and outer surfaces of each section.
If desired, the top section 12 may be provided at a suitable point with a suspension loop or ring 24k by means of which the strainer may be hung when desired.
It is of course understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the above specifically described construction of strainer without departing from the spirit of theinvention and being restricted only by the scope of the following claim.
I claim:
In a device of the class described, in combination, a pair of annular members each formed with a bead upon its outer end, a funnel-shaped portion having its base formed of equal diameter with said annular members and each being also formed with an intermediate outwardly extending bead joining the annular member and funnel shaped portion together the intermediate bead of one member resting upon the outer bead of the other member so as to space the funnel shaped portion of the second memher from the outer bead of the first member, hinge elements pivoted together and secured upon the respective annular members said hinge elements having curved portions engaging the beads of said hinged annular members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HANNAH A. SIGNOR.
