Application led July 14, 1909. Serial No. 507,543.
To (1f/Z wlmi/L 'it may concern:
Be it. known that I, CLir'roN S. Son'rznn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Wing, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Check-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pocket check books of the class wherein a pad of check leaves is removably secured to a folding holder or cover. In check books of this character it has been found most convenient to arrange the stub and check porby side, and to secure the check pad to the holder in such way that there shall be no folding of the check padexce t along the line of erforations between t e stub )orton and tie check portion, so that when t e book -is o )cned the cheek portions of the leaves shalll lie flat upon the supporting back without fold or,
It is the object of the invention to provide a book of this character, which can be folded u so as to lit convenientlyin pocket or bag, which can be opened conveniently and naturally by the user, which has a pocket for the deposit book on the inner side of the cover where it is convenientI for use, and wherein the cover is supported so that it will not easily break or crack] To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a peri spective View of the check book open for use, and F'g. 2 is a side view of the book when folded and closed.
In the drawings is shown a cover or holder of leather or other suitable material, having a stiifened back portion 2, slightly longer than the check portion of the check leaves to be used therein, to which is hinged at the left end a stub holding iiap 3 of approximately the same length as the stub portions of said leaves, and at the right end a flap 4 long enough slightly to overlap the outer end of the left hand Hap 3, when Ithe book is folded. The hinges 5 and 6, by which the end portions are hinged to the back, consist vpreferably of the unstiifened flexible fabric of the holder.
The flap portion 3 is formed with a transthe checkjleaves are bound together upon the backing strip 8, which is` of stiffer materiale and designed to be inserted into the pocket- 7, as shown in the drawings.- This pocket is positioned at such distance from the line of fold 6 that the check leaves will. lie upon the holder with their stubs` upon the iiap 3 on one side of the line of fold, Iand their check ortions on the back 2 on the other 70 side of? the line of fold, so that the line of separation l1 between them will be coincident with the line of fold.
The Hap e at `the opposite end of the cover is formed on its inner or under side' with a 75 pocket l2, the mouth of which isfdirected toward the free end of the flap. The pocket extends; nearly to the line of fold 6, and is adapted to receive a deposit or entry bo`ok13.I
In use, the flap 3 with the stub ortions of 80* the check pad carried by it isA rst folded over-upon the check portion, and then the flap l which carries the deposit book is folded down over the flap 3, which it over-v laps and to which it is detachably fastened by means of the cooperating s ring fasten'- ing members 14 and 15 upon t e outer side and the inner side of the ila 4,
folded along the perforated line 1l only, and 90 the deposit oookL will lie opposite the stub portion'of the pad and support theflap 4 1n substantial alineinent with the Hap 3, and prevent it from cracking or breaking over-.the adjacent end of the stub portion. Furthermore, by constructing the check book as here described, not only is the deposit book carried in the place most convenient 4 for use, viz., upon the inner side` of the right. hand flap 4, but this flap folds downA over the other or left hand flap, so that the book, when standing in proper position Will open right-handedly, that is by turning the iiap 4 from left to right.
I claim as vmy invention: 1. A folding check book comprising a cover having at each end a flap foldably secured thereto, and a pad of check leaves having stub portions at the left, and separable check portions at the right, said pad 110' being removably secured to the left hand flap in such position that the stub portions will lie upon the left hand flap and the check portions upon the, back, with the line of se eration between them coincident with the line of fold between said iap and back,
' and the ri ht hand flap having on its innerside a oc et adapted to receive a deposit book, tige left hand flap with the stub portions secured thereon folding down upon the check portions, and the right hand flap folding over upon the check portions with its outer end overlappin f the outer end of the left hand flap, where y the pocket will lie opposite said stub portions.
y2. A folding check book comprising a cover having at each end a lap foldably secured thereto, and a pad of check leaves having stub portions at the left and sepa.- rable check portions at the right, said pad being removably secured upon the left hand flap in such position that the stub portions will lie upon the left hand flap and the check portions upon the back, with the line of se aration between them coincident with the line of fold between said Hap and back, and the right hand flap having on its inner side a ocketv adapted to receive a deposit book, t e mouth of the pocket opening toward the free end of the flap and extending approximately to the line oi' fold between said ap and back, the left hand fla with' the stub portions carried thereby olding Y over u on the check portions, and the right 35 hand ap also folding over Aupon the check ortionswith its outer endV 'overlappin the ree vend of the let't hand flap so as to rin f the mouth of the pocket opposite the stub ortions upon the left hand flap, and means or detachably securing' the flaps in. folded position.
3.1A folding check book comprising a cover having at each end a'iap oldably secured thereto, and a pad of check leaves having stub portions at the left `and separablecheck portions at the right, said pad being' removably secured tov the left hand flap so that the stub portions will lie upon saidleft hand flap and the check portions upon the back, with the line of separation between them coincident with the line of fold between said flap and back, the left hand Hap being of approximately the same lengthvas the stub portions, and the ri hthand flap havingon its inner side a poc `et 'opening toward the free end of said flap and extending approximately to the line of fold between said flap and the back, and an entry book fitting in said pocket, said flaps folding over toward each other with the right hand iiap' overlapping the outer endof the left hand flap so as to bring the entry book opposite the stub portions of the check leaves, thereby supporting the right'hand flap at the place where it overlaps the left hand flap.
il. A pocket check book comprising a cover having at each end a Hap foldably secured thereto, and a pad of check leaves havin separable stubv and check portions arranged side by sidef'said pad being removably secured upon one of the'aps in suoli position that the stub portions will lie upon said .iap and the check portions upon the back, with the linevof separation between them coincident with the line of fold between said ap and back, and the other flap having on its inner side a pocket adapted to receive a deposit book, the flap carr ing the stub portions folding down upon t e check portions, and the flap carrying'the deposit book pocket also folding down upon the check ortions with the outer end of one flap over apping and detachably secured to the outer end of the other flap, whereby said 'pocket will lie opposite said stub portions.
In testimony whereof I affix my sinature in presence of two witnesses.
