CLFTGN S. SULTZER, OF .RED WING, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR ING COMPANY, UF RED WING, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION F MINNESOTA.
CHECK-Boon.
Be it known that. I, CniiroN S. a citizen of the `Lhiited States, residing at Red Ving, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Check- Books, ot which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesl to improvements in check books of the class wherein the checks are bound into pads and removably secured to a folding cover. ln hooks of this sort it is desirable that the books be folded into as small compass as possible. so that the book may be conveniently carried in bag or pocket; that each cheek have a stub extension on the same leaf; andthat when the book is lopened the check portions of the caves shall lie tlat against a supporting back withoutfold or crease, so that' the saine shall present a t'lat smooth writing surface.
it is the object ot this invention to provide a check bool-z which shall embody these and other features ot' improvement.
More especially' the invention consists in 'the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the check book ooened for use; Fig. 2 is a perspective view o the same With the check-pad partly removed from the cover or holder; Fig. 3 is a top view ot' the book when folded and closed, and Fig. et is S u urznn,
a longitudinal sect-ion through the pocket side of the cover on line w-w of Fig. :2.
In the drawings is shown a cover of leather or other foldable material. `reinforced or stiiiened on either side of a middle hinge-portion 2 to form fairly stiii leaves or sides 3 and 4, respectively, of approximately equal length. The left hand cover-leaf t is formed near the end with a pocket 5 to hold a deposit book G, and at a point nearer the hinge 2 with a pocket 7 to receive the backing strip of a pad of cheok-leaves- Each check-leaf has a check portion 9 extended at the left or binding end to form av shorter stub portion lO. Between the stub portion and the check portion is a line of perforations 11. The check leaves are bound t0- gether at their stub ends, and bound up with them upon the back of the pad 1s a short Specification of Letters Patent.' Application filed September 26, 1907. Serial No. 394,664.

backing strip or flap 8 of stiffer material. The backing strip is .of no greater length than the-stubs and is adapted 'to be inserted into the pocket @as illustrated in Fie. 2. This pocket is arranged at suchdistance om the hinge 2 that, when the backing-1121128 is inserted into the pocket, the check-lesivasy will lie upon'the cover With'their stubs upon one side of the hinge 2 and their check portions on the other perforations ll between them coincident with the hinge. Thus, Whenfthe sides of the cover are folded together .as shown in Fig. 3, the check leaves Will be folded alon' the line 11, and the check portions 9 Wil remain uncreased and unfolded. And when the book is opened for use the checks will lie smooth and flat against the supporting coverleaf 4, and may be Written on 'as readily7 as if the pad had never been folded. Thus all the advantages of astub at the end of each check are attained Without adding to the length of the book, or folding either stub or check. It will also be seen that the deposit book will form a filler and support i for the front cover leair` 3 and thus revent it4 from breaking over the edge of t e stub end of the pad.
If desired the cover may be extended at one end to form a Hap 12 which may be folded over the other end of the cover and detachably secured thereto by any suitable means such as the spring stud 13 and socket 14 shown in the drawings.
'I claim as my invention:
l. A folding check book comprising a cover having a line of fold between its ends, whereby to provide front and back leaves, the front leaf havin a pair of pockets eX- tending in the direction of the length. of the cover, one pocket having its opening near the line. of fold7 and the other pocket having `its opening farther toward the free end of said cover -af and adapted to receive a deposit book, and* a pad of bound check leaves having stub and check portions, said pad being formed with a backing strip titting Within the pocket adjacent to the llne of fold, whereby the pad is detachably held upon the cover, and the holding pocket being positioned at su@ distance from the line of fold that the line between the check and stub portions of the check leaves is coincident with the line of TO RED. WING- .ADVERTIS-- side, and with the line of mouth of said pad fold of the cover, said deposit book serving as 2i filler and support; for the front cover l lea 2. In a book` of the class described, the combination with a cover having a line of fold between its ends, whereby to provide front and back ortions, the front portion of the cover having a pair of pockets at its inner side arranged in alinenieiit, one of said pockets being adjacent to the line of fold,
and the other extending` substantially 'from I the termination of the lastanentioncd pocket t toward the free end oi5 the front portion of the cover and adapted to receive a pass book, of a pad o bound leaves including separablel Check and stub `portions ar tinged lside by side and positioned within the cover so that the line ot separation between the check and stub portions is coincident with the line ot fold ot the cover, and a backing lap carried by the pad and received by the pocket adjacent to the line of fold, 'whereby the pad is detachabhv held upon the cover, said backing flap and pass book serving to reinforce the front portion oi the cover.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a top and a lower cover7A integrally connected at their contiguous ends, said lower cover provided with a smooth inner faccfvsaid top cover provided with an inner pocket extending eiitnfel)7 across the top cover, and said top cover provided with an outer pocket extendingentirel)v acrossthe cover, said outer pocket terininat ing lshort of the inner pocket, a check-book resting upon Said top and lower covers said Cheek 5 book compris-ing sheets, cach sheet provided with a transverse line of perforations, all o'f the. transverse lines of peril'ora" tions registering with the inner endey of the coversv ,said check-book provided with a 'l'lap positioned in the inner pocket, aait? perforations dividingl the sheets into cheeks and stub-portions, the check-portions lying)r tlat upon and parallel \\'it+1\tl1e inner sniooth vtace t .f
ot the lower cover and the stld ptn-tion lying lat upon and parallel with the inner pocket of the top cover,.Saidicheclclmoli olsubstantialhv the saine width as said top-cover and lower cover, and the outer end ot the stubportion terminating ahort ot' the inner end of the outer pocket.
