To all whom it' may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. GRovER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to pen holders and particularly to pen holders having means for disengaging a pen point therefrom when worn.

The object is to provide a pen holder of this description which is much simpler and cheaper than any heretofore devised, and which is not so likely to become clogged with dried ink.

To this end my invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following description and particularly specified in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure l, is a perspective lview of one form of my pen holder. Fig. 2,

is a view of the underside of one end thereof. Fig. 3, is a view of the end, the pen holding and discharging sleeves being in section. Fig. 4, is a plan view of the blank from which the discharging sleeve is made.

Referring now to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, 2 designates a pen holder of an ordinary style having its lower end reduced as at 2 and tapered. Surrounding the reduced portion is a split tube 3 tapered toward the pen holding end which extends beyond the end of the handle 2 as is usual in pen holders of this character. Surrounding this sleeve is the longitudinally shiftable split sleeve 4 formed of a blank of the form shown in Fig. 4. This blank is formed with a recess 4 on its side edge which when the blank is rolled upon a mandrel to produce the completed discharging sleeve forms with the other side of the blank a longitudinal slot as shown in Fig. 2. This sleeve is also tapered concentrically to the split tube 3, but is sufficiently larger than the tube to accommodate a pen point inserted between the sleeve and the split tube.

The pin 5 projects from the sleeve 3 or is driven through it into the wood of the handle and projects out through the slot 4. On its upper face the sliding sleeve has a lug 6 by which the sleeve may be shifted.

In operation, when it is desired to insert a pen 7 into the holder, the exterior sleeve 4 is drawn back, the pen is then placed upon the interior sleeve 3 and the sleeve 4 is forced forward over the butt end of the pen the thickness of the pen acting to jam the sleeve in this position.

In discharging the pen, it is only necessary to withdraw the sleeve to its rearward position when the pen will fall out or may be easily removed.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A pen holder having a tube at its eXtremity gradually contracted toward the en holding end provided with a stud projecting therefrom, in combination with a split sleeve surrounding said tube and movable therealong, said sleeve being tapered gradually in conformity with said tube and holding by its spring action, a pen point between it and the tube, and having a recess on one edge thereof which when the sleeve is closed forms a slot to receive the stud on the interior tube, said sleeve fitting over the upper face of the pen point and adapted when shifted rearward to be disengaged from said pen point.
